Tariffs on Mexico and Canada

Naw, he's bluffing. How is he going to approve the XL pipeline and then hit his own oil companies with a 25% tariff?.. He's bluffing. He will hit China and Europe. Why would he hit Csnada only to have the tariffs removed in four years time when he is out of office? China is the palatable threat and he knows it. The rest of the world he can hit with a reciprocal tariffs but if he hits Canadian oil, nickel and such, he is only hurting the U.S. It's different from hitting an end product manufactured outside the U.S. He would be tariffing the underlying materials that his new manufacturiing companies wll need in order to manufacture. We will see. I have to say I would feel comfortable sitting in a room and convincing him. Mexico has a.FAR more difficult task. For Canada it would be easy if anyone with a strong understanding of both nations challenges heads up the team.

Trump's entire economic plan is to enact universal tariffs on everything, with our enemies being hit the hardest like china, canada and mexico. Why would he bluff? Bluffing to achieve what goal?

Why do lefties resist the concept of "America first"? They make up all kinds of horror stories related to tariffs as if we never had one in history. It's a bargaining chip to force countries to comply with the interests of the United States. Quit whining about Chinese made junk in Walmart and enjoy cheaper energy and cheaper prices in the grocery stores.

We import a nearly endless amount of food from various countries around the world. How will a high universal tariff on all of them, a great deal of which we don't make or produce here in the United States result in cheaper food? Wouldn't the very opposite be true?

There won't be any cheaper prices in the grocery stores at all because of mass deportations and closed borders. No cheap labour in the fields or the processing plants means no cheap food on the shelves, or in your restaurants.
Chump wants to make the US like Alabama in 2012, with crops rotting in the fields.

No, I meant I'd believe he's bluffing. He just makes up shit off the top of his head and MAGA idiots hang on every word he says even though he contradicts himself all over the place.
Trump is trying to bully these countries into making deals.

He still doesn't understand that global, geopolitical relations are not the same as domestic commercial real estate relations.

The only human being to ever bankrupt a string of fucking cash cow casinos doesn't see a potential downside here, because he is aggressively ignorant.

/—-/ You are clueless about Atlantic City, or worse, you know better but are lying.

He wants to contain China by pissing off the allies he'd need to contain China. He hasn't spent a second thinking it through.

Former allies, sadly. It appears they no longer trust us and are going in other directions. They believe in consistent, not transactional, global relationships.

Unfortunate but understandable.

/—-/ Is Newsweek lying too?

I see your reading comprehension sucks.

"Caravans of migrants no longer reach the border," Sheinbaum said on Tuesday while presenting a letter she plans to send to Trump in the coming days. She also emphasized Mexico's efforts to curb the flow of drugs, including the synthetic opioid fentanyl, while noting that it remains "a public health and consumption problem within your country's society."

"Maybe President Trump doesn't know this, but of those arriving at the border—which is significantly fewer, 75 percent less than in December 2023—half them have a CBP One appointment. In other words, they have an appointment. So, they [the U.S.] are the ones inviting them to come to the United States," she said.

Sheinbaum also highlighted Mexico's proactive role in addressing migration while criticizing the U.S. for failing to tackle the root causes. "If a percentage of what the United States spends on war were dedicated to peace and development, it would address the underlying causes of migration," she said, advocating for regional investment over punitive measure

So Trump is threatening tariffs over a problem that we've largely caused.

Fixed it for ya, Sparky.

We just had an election with the anti-Harris vote largely animated by misplaced resentment over inflation, yet........

Trump’s 10% tariff would annually harm households by at least $1,700: AAF

Damage from a sweeping tariff would spread beyond the U.S., “threatening key relationships with allies and inviting a global trade war,” AAF said.

He's proposing 25% for Canada and Mexico.

Trump bellows that he is going to break the agreement he negotiated!

The corporate structure of the casino biz was set up as a way for trump to extract cash from the biz over the objections of the shareholders, leading to mismanagement.
More or less the same as him going public with his social media platform that's losing millions every quarter. Knowing the rubes were ripe for the slaughter, he anticipated the value of the stock would be pinned to his cult-like persona, not the enterprise value of the entity. He makes Barnum look childish by comparison.

Whoopsie, Canada isn't happy, either

Canadian officials on Tuesday blasted President-elect Donald’s Trump’s threat to impose sweeping tariffs, as the leader of the country’s most populous province called Trump’s comparison of Canada to Mexico “the most insulting thing I’ve ever heard.”

Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on products from Canada, Mexico and China as soon as he takes office in January as part of efforts to crack down on illegal immigration and drugs. He said he would impose a 25% tax on all products entering the U.S. from Canada and Mexico as one of his first executive orders.
We pulled the trigger on buying a replacement sofa as I expect wood prices and therefore furniture prices to jump. We have no plans for major expenses in the next year or two.

Canada is an enemy now?

There will no doubt be a surge of activity in anticipation of tariffs. Many companies have already announced measures in preparation of them. Some having adjusted guidance to account for higher prices of their products leading to lower sales.
