1 May`14 ~ The number of U.S. service members who reported being sexually assaulted surged by 50 percent last year, the Pentagon announced Thursday, the latest sign of how the military has struggled to cope with sex crimes in the ranks.

I was in the Marine Corps from 1956 to 1960 and I never heard of anyone being sexually assaulted in the military! Never!

Back then, because of proximity to WW-II, the history and the nature of our military services was essentially prideful. The general atmosphere in the ranks was such that the very thought of sexual assault was unheard of and was a generally unacceptable concept.

I understand that because of such debacles as Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, along with a few other minor but equally unnecessary adventures, combined with suspension of the draft, has led to the need to lower the bar in terms of minimum enlistee character standards. So much so in fact the Army and Marines are accepting recruits with criminal backgrounds. But I had no idea the situation had deteriorated to this level.

Oh...it happened. However, women in the military learned to keep mouths shut when assaulted....for fear (justified or not) of being accused of and charged with being gay. That fear is now gone. This increase in REPORTING doesn't surprise me in the least once DADT was gone.

Homosexuality was not tolerated in the 1950s Marine Corps. Looking back, I recall two guys who I now believe might have been closeted gays but who wouldn't dare come out.

I do know of only one actual incident involving a staff sergeant (a really likeable individual) who propositioned a PFC -- who set him up. I felt very sorry for that staff when the CID arrested him at the appointed rendezvous. There was something very wrong about that.

But in spite of that rigid prohibition in the male sector it was a quietly accepted awareness that a significant percentage of the women Marines on LeJeune were lesbians. With some it was unmistakably obvious. And while I'm sure there was consensual activity with some of those WMs I find it hard to believe there was any forcible sexual activity among them.

I just can't imagine anything like that happening without it creating an enormous shit-storm.
