The debt gets paid, automatically, regardless of the politics, it is the law, the law of the constitution. It is called a debt ceiling because it prevents congress from borrowing above that ceiling.

The debt ceiling is no different than a credit line. To create more debt, they must raise the debt ceiling.

I criticized Trump on his tax cuts, his spending bills and not being fiscally responsible.

Deficit spending also has nothing to do with the debt ceiling. You can have deficit spending without raising the debt ceiling.

Defaulting on debt is not sustainable

You can't keep using that excuse when Congress simply won't avoid the inevitable crash. When it happens, it will be on them, all of them, from the time we started accumulating and not paying down the debt until the time it became so large no one would lend any more money. It would be easier to default on a smaller number than a larger one.
