Republican SNAP Proposals Could Take Food Away From Millions of Low-Income Individuals and Families

I have no problem with SNAP for truly needing individuals but if you're able bodied you need to try and support yourself

It's much easier to do that when we have a government that invests in the American people, by developing infrastructure that facilitates "supporting yourself", like providing citizens with a good education, a modern, extensive, well-run public transit system, making sure workers have rights and are protected from being fired for forming unions..etc. Union workers on average make about 20% more than non-unionized labor. Workers need access to affordable housing, food, healthcare, and fuel for their cars at reasonable prices.

We could've now in 2025, had an electric grid relying on clean, abundant nuclear energy, but our government is in bed with the fossil fuel industry and keeps us addicted to oil, gas, and coal. If we would generate our electricity with nuclear plants, we would have enough electricity to transition from gas-guzzling engines to electric ones.

If we're going to live under an economic system that exploits human labor for profit, in a totalitarian-run workplace, by a small class of wealthy, greedy capitalist dictators, then we need to make sure workers have the resources to effectively support themselves. Eventually, hopefully, thanks to advanced automation and artificial intelligence, we'll be able to replace capitalism with an economic system that is better compatible with advanced production technology and more democratic.

With Trump at the helm, we're more likely to go to war with China.

Below is a selection of publicly known analysts, publications, and commentary suggesting that a military conflict with China or Russia is a significant risk—possibly even likely—before 2030.

1. Admiral Philip S. Davidson’s 2021 Testimony Before the Senate Armed Services Committee

  • Who: Admiral Philip Davidson served as the Commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM).
  • Key Statement: In a March 2021 Senate hearing, Admiral Davidson warned of a potential Chinese military move against Taiwan within the next six years (i.e., by 2027).

2. General Mike Minihan’s 2023 Memo on Potential Conflict by 2025

  • Who: General Mike Minihan is a four-star general in the U.S. Air Force and head of Air Mobility Command.
  • Key Statement: In January 2023, a leaked memo from Gen. Minihan predicted that the United States would likely be at war with China in about two years.

3. Hal Brands and Michael Beckley – Danger Zone: The Coming Conflict with China (2022)

  • About the authors:
    • Hal Brands is a professor of Global Affairs at Johns Hopkins SAIS and a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI).
    • Michael Beckley is an associate professor at Tufts University and also a fellow at AEI.

4. RAND Corporation – War with China: Thinking Through the Unthinkable (2016)

  • About the Study: This RAND report (by David C. Gompert, Astrid Stuth Cevallos, and Cristina L. Garafola) examines scenarios for a hypothetical U.S.-China war.

5. The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) / Various Think Tank Briefs

Some annual risk assessments by organizations like the Economist Intelligence Unit, Atlantic Council, and the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) also highlight the potential for conflict escalation involving China or Russia:

  • Atlantic Council: Has published multiple policy briefs on Great Power Conflict scenarios, suggesting that the U.S. and China could face a “dangerous decade” ahead if tensions remain high over Taiwan and the South China Sea, and if Russia’s confrontational posture in Eastern Europe persists or expands.
  • Representative Statement (Atlantic Council, Global Risks 2035):
  • IISS “Military Balance” Reports: Annually assess global military capabilities and highlight intensifying U.S.-China and NATO-Russia rivalries, though not always with a definitive “likely war” statement.

Yawn, woulda, coulda, shoulda. Run along and come back when you have something more than tin hat paranoia.

There needs to be more restrictions of what people can use food stamps for. NO bottled water is a start. Or soda. In fact, there should be a very limited list of what CAN be bought with our money:

  • Milk, juice, eggs, cheese, cereal, bread, tuna, peanut butter, jelly
  • Ground beef, chicken, fish
  • Fruit, rice, and frozen veggies

That’s it.

Who died and appointed you as Chief Nutritionist?

None of the blue states can afford it.

Watch, they'll scream the loudest.

No worries. They will just raise their property taxes even more and allow their residents to write it off on their federal income taxes so we can all subidize it. This is why the SALT cap should not be raised, but it will be to appease those in high tax blue states.

15th post
Now that I think about it, we should cut 10% from SNAP while simultaneously ruling out soda, bottled water, any type of junk food.

If they want to throw money away on unhealthy or unnecessary items, they can get a job and use their OWN money.

I would not accuse him of that

But he does not deal with opposing opinions very well
Thanks.

And we really do need to redo SNAP. I know someone who gets so much money on SNAP - herself and her four kids - that she shops at Whole Foods. Even I can’t afford that!

Why no bottled water? There are parts of this country where the tap water is barely drinkable. (Florida, for example - beyond hard water)

Instead of bottled water (which is $5 a case) maybe focus on the type of beef, chicken and fish people can buy? (Regular ground beef vs wagu ground beef, salmon vs lobster, etc).

The main reason they don't restrict them as much as some think they should is because they basically qualify for a "certain amount of money" so if they decide to blow 90% of it on junk, steaks and lobster, then are forced to eat ramen noodles the rest of the month, after the good stuff runs out, that's on them. But if they're smart with it, they can eat well for the entire month.
