Problem with NATO is that to invoke Article 5, the US has to be attacked. Any other NATO involvement would be discretionary.

Trump has not exactly been on good terms with our NATO allies. Threatening Greenland, pressuring Denmark, mocking UK, France, Germany and Italy.
Not a good way to gain good will.

NATO is under no obligation to help us. Article 5 only applies if the US is attacked …..not for preemptive or retaliatory military excursions.
