Why should they both be given the boot when one obviously only fired back in self defense?

P.S. I believe that the surveillance system would be able to say who it is that threw the first punch. I also don't believe that who fired back in self defense should be fired for not being thorough enough in their self defense. At least they tried which in my opinion is always better than never even trying at all period.
