Washington DC Now Has the Highest Unemployment Rate in the Country at 6.9 Percent - The Last Refuge
24 Apr 2026 ~~ By Sundance

A few years ago, I was eating breakfast in a DC hotel listening to two men talk about their schedule for the day. Their business was decorating homes for Christmas, and they were discussing their heavy workload.
As I listened quietly the men were describing premium rates for DC families who wanted their decorating services completed fastest. The average rate was $15,000 per residence for 30-day interior holiday decorating, and the rates went up from there. They were overwhelmed with business calls.
I sat there stunned doing spit-takes with my coffee while thinking, “holy cow, who has that kind of money to blow, just renting Holiday decorations?” One of the client names was familiar, Kellyanne Conway. “Jumpin’ ju-ju bones, this is an actual thing they do up here,” I thought. My mind was blown, but this put context to the economic bubble that isolated DC from the rest of ‘real’ America.
Yesterday, I read a New York Times column describing how the professional political employees and their families have been impacted by President Trump and the downsizing of the federal workforce.
Amid the tear-filled typeset meant to generate sympathy this part jumped out at me: “The District of Columbia currently has the highest unemployment rate in the nation, at 6.7 percent, in large part because of major reductions in the federal work force, including U.S.A.I.D., and cuts to government grants and contracts.”

Commentary:
Remember all the stories about how despite the country hurting, all the DC restaurants and bars were swinging? (government workers with high salaries living it up)
About how DC never felt the economic pain their policies inflicted?
Well, the gravy train's over!
I wonder how many former Federal Employees have learned to "Code"?
“You have been weighed, you have been measured, and you absolutely… have been found wanting.
Welcome to the REAL World.”
The next to fall should be the "Non-Profit" frauds. SPLC is the first, just how many others will follow?
Seems a lot of 'Democrats" will soon be out of jobs and the offshore banking will be found curbed and recovered...

Washington, D.C. has about as much to do with regular America as aluminum foil does with nuclear physics.

Yep DC is 51 and Cali is 50

Dem Mayors and Governors and legislatures make for tough

The seat of the federal govt should be a federal district not a state

And that is why a Constitutional Amendment would be needed to make it a state.

Of course the Dems want to also pack SCOTUS, so they'd get enough dummies to say a simple law is okay.

Get enough Jackson's and Sotomayor's, and it is all over. A Supreme Court of dummies.

The seat of the federal govt should be a federal district not a state
That's what the Founding Fathers insisted upon.
Which is why the Democrats are dropping trou and crapping all over it.

It is a good thing. One hopes that it is a lot of government employees who lost their jobs.

It is a misperception that the wealth in DC is bureaucrats with high salaries and two-income households. But the real money is those who provide consultation, services, legal advice and so forth to the government, many of whom are retirees, ex military, and people like that. Formerly called, "Beltway Bandits." Those are the ones who really make a killing.

A high unemployment rate in the District is a good sign.

Moving to DC from the Midwest, I discovered that parents of my friends here didn't have the same economic difficulties that my parents and their friends had growing up during the depression. That’s because they didn’t have a depression here in DC because DC thrives on money drawn from everywhere else.
I always thought it would be a good idea to create a parallel story to The Grapes of Wrath where the Joads’ cousins moved to DC instead of California and lived high on the hog as a result.

Thank DOGE.

Every state capital economy thrives off income collected by taxes.

This is a stupid thread.

DC is run by Congress. That's why it should become a state.

It should become a state cause it’s run by Congress?

Actually DC is run by a mayor and 13 counsel members and has been since 1973
