I got that same special privilege when I worked out of town. I could vote by mail to avoid risking losing my job. Can we not do the same to let people avoid dying from Covid-19?

Plus, I have never had to stand in line for more than 5 or 10 minutes at the grocery store. Voting I have stood in line for over an hour on several occasions.

People do stand in line multiple times and cheat by voting in person, ALL the time.
That is the MAIN way that people do voter fraud and vote multiple time.
They can go to multiple polling stations in different districts, cities, counties, or states.
What is impossible to cheat at and vote multiple times is with a mail in ballot, because only one is sent to you.
And it is easiest to verify your identity through the post office, than any other way.
Mail in voting is the best way to almost eliminate voter fraud.
If there is a concern, it would be spousal pressure.

It does not matter who does the correlation and cross checking with things like birth records, citizenship status, death records, etc. The point is it is more easily done with mail in ballots rather than in person, because in person requires a person to be able to just walk in and instantly be allowed to vote. Only mail in voting gives time for this sort of background check to be done ahead of time.

The post office already is supposed to be watching for and catching where fake addresses are set up at empty buildings, too many names at the same address, etc. So they are the best entity to make sure the person and address are real and correlate. People do stand in line multiple times and cheat by voting in person, ALL the time.
That is the MAIN way that people do voter fraud and vote multiple time.
They can go to multiple polling stations in different districts, cities, counties, or states.
What is impossible to cheat at and vote multiple times is with a mail in ballot, because only one is sent to you.
And it is easiest to verify your identity through the post office, than any other way.
Mail in voting is the best way to almost eliminate voter fraud.
If there is a concern, it would be spousal pressure.

Only mail in voting gives time for this sort of background check to be done ahead of time.

The post office already is supposed to be watching for and catching where fake addresses are set up at empty buildings, too many names at the same address, etc. So they are the best entity to make sure the person and address are real and correlate. Main fraud already has a huge investigation force all the time, as well as the necessary legislation to prosecute. Voter registration offices are vastly understaffed in comparison, and have no such investigative or prosecutional staff or legislative empowerment.
