Just want to see what the general consensus is on this proposal by Bernie, Kamala, and Markey Mark! If this somehow gains traction in the Senate and gets approval in the House, will Trump sign it into law?

Follow up question. If so, what impact will this have on the election? The economy? Inflation?

This is my take, for what it's worth (very little, I suspect).

If this somehow gets approved in some form by Congress and signed by Trump, I think it will be the ultimate form of socialism. Talk about wealth redistribution!!! People will be paid massive sums to basically do nothing.

Even though I'm as liberal as they come, I personally think this is a terrible idea. The rate of saving has gone steadily up since the 2008 Great Recession. I think, even with 0% interest rates, people will just sit on the money or best-case scenario, pay off their high-interest debt.

Yes exactly -- so $2000 per month for up to 3 months AFTER the pandemic goes away. That's $24,000 in helicopter money per year per person. Don't know if that will be taxable or tax-free income either. But either way, it will result in major wage retraction and disincentive to work!

The most outlandish vote buying scheme that has ever presented.
There is no way this could ever be good for America and would be a giant step towards communism
I mean, it's pure socialism...a ton of people will make much more money with unemployment + helicopter money then they ever made working. They will just sit at home and ride it out. How are we going to get the truckers, grocery clerks, fast-food workers, etc. to show up to work and risk their lives for basically less money! Not to mention anyone stuck in a dead-end white-collar job!

And as far as the election goes -- I think if Trump signs this into law, Biden can easily pivot off of this and say that even he wouldn't have signed it into law. Bam, game, set, match for Biden, because all fiscal conservatives will abandon Trump en-masse. This is especially true if you get a Mark Cuban to run as an independent (not totally out of the realm of possibilities).

it will never happen. A yaht can not be bought with that kind of money so they will not support it. We get a pittance of 1200 dollars and the one percenters get millions. When has it ever been different. Why even contemplate that which will not happen. Here I sit with my account frozen due to divorce that never fucking ends. There wi be no reief

You really have to love the lack of education shown by the backers of this. First off the amount of money needed to be put on our deficit would be amazing. We are almost to the point that we can't pay on the intrest to the deficit without dropping things like social programs.
Second welfare and other such programs are already enough of an incentive not to work adding to that is just crazy.
Lastly it will increase inflation.

They are already having trouble now
The stimulus, known as the CARES Act, provides an additional $600 per week in unemployment benefits over and above state benefits. Before it passed, conservative politicians pointed out that a lot of newly unemployed might make more than they earned while working. We have not yet fully considered the possible effects.

If this was called Democrat reparations for destroying America.. I’d be OK with her for a couple years as long as we got new education policies put in place

Where will you get the money from and what will you buy with it when the stores are all closed?

This will never happen so I don't worry one ounce about it. Neither should you. I think one more round of stimulus checks would bep a wise thing as thosep who go back to work are going to still bep struggling mightily since wages are low for most so it was difficult already.

Nice article -- I think there is an argument for serious wage inflation in the near future, which combined with a stagnating economy, would produce the dreaded stagflation that crippled the economy in the 1970s.
