Little Known Facts About General Robert Edward Lee

Lee was a great general, but made a huge mistake. He should have realized he couldn’t win the war fighting pitched battles against a much better equipped and manned opponent. Had he employed gorilla tactics on a bigger scale as Stonewall Jackson had successfully done in his Shenandoah Valley campaigns, Lee likely prolongs the war. Thus causing greater anti-war upheaval in the North and leading to support from European powers.

The European Powers were never going to support the South because most of them had outlawed slavery and saw the South as an embarrassment.

Oh brother. Your post clearly indicates you know nothing.

France and Great Britain considered supporting the South. Had the South not lost so many pivotal battles, it’s likely support would have materialized.

Not likely, because, again, slavery was unacceptable in these countries. France was still under the sway of revolutionary thinking, having just deposed another King for another Napoleon. The UK had abolished slavery in the entire Empire 30 years before.

The reason why we need to really denounce and reject any praise for Confederate leaders is because what they did was not only evil, it was massively stupid. There was NO scenario where they were going to win.

Silly. Slavery was unacceptable in those countries, but they didn’t give a shit about slavery in the Confederacy.

You don't know what your talking about.

Except none of them recognized the Confederacy and none of them aided the Confederacy.

In fact, Davis in the last desperate days of the war even offered to end slavery in exchange for recognition, and they Europeans, bless their hearts, said, "Hard Pass"

Now you change the subject. WTF!

Probably true
The 1864 election was key. Lincoln vs McClellan
If the war was going bad, Lincoln would have lost and McClellan would have sought peace.

They needed to fight like the Vietnamese. Inflict casualties and prolong the war. Make them tired of the war.

Agreed. The Vietnam War is a perfect example of the successful use of gorilla war tactics. Had the Confederacy employed them, it is likely Lincoln isn’t re-elected and the South gains freedom.

It is hard to understand how Lee could have thought he could win, fighting the way he did. He knew of the many disadvantages his army had. He must have been blinded by his pride and belief that his soldiers and generals were better fighters.

How anyone in their right mind could order Picketts Charge, a charge over open ground in full view of Union artillery and concealed rifle fire, is hard to understand. It had to be one of the dumbest military actions in American history.

Longstreet advocated the Confederates pivot and move around them avoiding further conflict. He was labeled a coward.

Longstreet often advocated avoiding pitched battles. He preferred fighting defensively. However his delay in assaulting Little Round Top, allowed time for the Union to fortify that position. Many blamed him for the lose at Gettysburg, because he delayed.

Lee forgot the Principles.

Same goes for Early at Culps Hill. Stonewall Jackson wouldn’t have hesitated.

Stonewall would have taken the hill on day one. He would not stop fighting until it was impossible to stop..............which got him killed by his own troops.

He was very good at moving around the enemy flanks and hitting them ......then moving again.....making them think they were up against far more than were actually there.

If we are judging Gettysburg .....via ......the decision making for it...........Then the march North should have never happened.

Not sending reinforcements to Vicksburg was a SERIOUS ERROR...........It allowed an Army to go basically unchecked through the center of the South. At a minimum Barksdale should have been sent back to Mississippi to avoid that.

That was the Major mistake
