Where is the looove....?
Within 48 hours of losing one czar, Van Jones, President Barack Obama announced another one. In a speech to the AFL-CIO in Cinncinnati, OH, President Barack Obama named Ron Bloom as his manufacturing czar. Bloom formerly reported to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner as part of the auto industry task force. Prior to that Bloom worked as an advisor to the United Steelworkers union so this appointment should not come as a surprise to anyone.
Later in the speech when discussing health care reform, Obama hit below the belt against Republicans in a mocking and condescending tone.
"I've got a question for all those folks. What are you gonna do? What's your answer? What's your solution? And you know what? They don't have one! Their answer is to do nothing. And we know what that future looks like...."
It seems that Mr. Obama who has publicly called for compromise on the health care reform issue has been acting as a dictator as two of the main compromises the Republicans have asked for have been shot down and are essentially off the table: tort reform and allowing futher competition by allowing insurance companies to cross state lines when selling policies. So for the President to suggest that the Republicans won't do anything is clearly an unfair accusation.
As he was railing against the insurance companies while speaking about competion and choice, Obama also went on the record to say that he still is in favor of a public option which came as a surprise as various reports in the past weeks have mentioned that the administration is willing to concede on the public option so reform has a greater chance of passing.
"And I continue to believe that a public option within that basket of insurance choices will help quality and bring down costs."
