Kentucky wants to ban junk food from SNAP (food stamps)

The government should not ever dictate what the people eat. That is some Orwellian shit there.

They're not dictating what they eat. They're dictating what kind of food they get for free, on the gov't dime. That they CAN do. They want junk food? Fine, but you're going to buy it with your own money like everyone else does.

After I got fired from a job for refusing to do illegal work to an airplane that later crashed and killed 5 people, I was briefly on SNAP. I bought very very little "junk" food. In fact, I ate better on SNAP than I did OFF of it because then I could afford good wholesome quality food that I couldn't working for the hangar. I had just bought a brand new car and a house. I had very little left over for food. I was literally towing 20 million dollar aircraft out onto the ramp, and then hopping off the tug and eating a TV dinner for lunch. On a good day. Most days it was a cheese sandwich. It was nuts. One of the hangar owners pilots felt so bad for me, he told me "You single handedly run this place to perfection and you can't afford a decent lunch" most of the time when he came over to tinker with his jet, he would take me out to eat at Piccadilly. THAT WAS A TREAT.

So losing my job I was able to budget 100% SNAP into food. That helped a ton. 8 years of Obama ensured I didn't get paid well. Within 6 months of Trump starting his first term, my pay doubled.

It is their money when they receive it, WTF are you to dictate to someone what they can and can't eat.

No, it's not their money. It's gov't money. It's not money, it's benefits. Just as I can hand you a credit card and tell you that you are only allowed to purchase certain things with it, the gov't can do the same. They did nothing to EARN these benefits, so yea, they can put strings on them.

You bring up "individual rights" in a thread about government redistribution of money LMAO
I have him on ignore and I don't even have to see his post to know - guaranteed, he has brought race into this. This guy is the perfect-perfect example what Democrats want blacks to be.

When it's on the taxpayer's dime we should have all the say.
All these extra rules may be emotionally satisfying but ultimately make these programs more cumbersome and increase bureaucracy and lead to government bloat.

It’s very inefficient and costly.

Actually Kentucky is simplifying its food stamp program

BS.....Before the grocery lobby caused food stamps to happen the local Salvation Army handed out the USDA staple boxes in my AO.

Volunteers and even the police delivered them to poor people who were shut-ins. Even the local cab companies got in on the act.

Yeah, it might have been a bit cumbersome but only those in real need got them.

Absolutely not. Now you need bureaucrats who categorize every food product to determine if it meets their definition, you need bureaucrats to disseminate that information, you need bureaucrats to monitor compliance.

It's way more complicated.

That requires an entire manufacturing and distribution system to be established separate and apart from grocery stores. Private industry will also be more efficient and doing this than government.

It's more efficient to utilize private industry for the same purpose.

I've been saying this for a thousand years. SNAP should only get you rice, flour, rolled oats, bananas, and canned beans.

How very NAZI of you to dictate what can be bought. Didn't you people go batshit crazy when the state of New York tried to limit sugar in soft drinks????

They have already done all that without hiring a single extra person

I have no issue with using SNAP to buy cookies or stuff like it. What about the mother who is raising kids by herself through no fault of her own. Sometimes sh!t just happens and people need help. How is this going to be regulated in the stores? Is there a SNAP food section?

Nonsense. Extra rules require extra bureaucracy to manage and enforce it.

You guys complain about government inefficiency. All these extra rules (which accomplish nothing) create that inefficiency.

No it's not. For people with medical conditions or food allergies, restrictions on what they can buy may leave them unable to use the funds. This has been the big argument against restricting what can be purchased.

Not to mention - who decides what's "junk" food? To me, sugar sweetened cereals are "junk food". Any prepared and packaged food is "junk food" since processing removes nutrients and adds fats and sugars, reducing nutrition.

Americans eat the most processed foods in the world and you have the obesity rates to prove it.

The only way to simply the food stamp program is to eliminate it. Increase welfare rates and minimum wage.

Negative, rules are established, and the grocery stores must enforce it least they lose the privilege of accepting EBT.
