Kennedy Center threatens to sue musician who canceled concert after Trump's name added to building

Oh no Doug Varone and Dancers has cancelled too.

Looks like everyone that no one has ever heard
And it's their choice to forego the exposure they would have gotten. Their loss.

Wasn't this supposed to be a free concert? I thought somebody tried to make that point to say the artist shouldn't be sued for damages.
I think so, however the seats still are by ticket, or something.

To me this is a story by, for, and about the Washington elite. I doubt I would ever be able to get a ticket to anything there.

Sounds like the line up for Trumps first inaugural.

Nothing as compared to all the "A" list musicians at Obama's inaugural.

When you cater to the public you have to endure the publics wrath.

Remember: Chick-fil-A's main controversy stems from its long-standing opposition to same-sex marriage by its leadership (especially CEO Dan Cathy)
Glad you brought that up, how did that work out for you? You loons tried to put them out of business. Only to make them bigger than ever!

Since the name changed, any contracts signed for the performances are now null and void.
Which would render the venue not liable to actually pay the artists? Somehow, I don't think that legal opinion is going to hold water.

Contracts are still valid if the entities LEGALLY changed the name.

What happens to contracts when a company changes its name?

In the case of a name change, for example, a novation agreement might be needed in order to make a new contract with the newly named business. Another option for changing a contract for a business change is to create a letter of agreement that refers to the specific change and have both parties sign it.

Well Jason Aldean, Carrie Underwood, Nelly, Village People, Kid Rock are certainly no Doug Varone and Dancers
A veteran jazz ensemble and a New York dance company have canceled events at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, intensifying the fallout at one of the nation’s pre-eminent arts centers after it was renamed to include President Trump.

The center had previously promoted two New Year’s Eve performances by the Cookers as an “all-star jazz septet that will ignite the Terrace Theater stage with fire and soul.” But those performances, like an annual Christmas Eve jazz concert hosted by Chuck Redd, are now canceled.

The Cookers did not give a reason for the decision in a statement on Monday that said, “Jazz was born from struggle and from a relentless insistence on freedom: freedom of thought, of expression, and of the full human voice.”

But the band’s drummer, Billy Hart, told The New York Times that the center’s name change had “evidently” played a role. He acknowledged that the group was concerned about possible reprisals.

IRS audits, death threats from the mob, social media attacks by His Orangeness? It's all on the table.

Doug Varone and Dancers, a New York dance company, also said on Monday that it was canceling two performances in April that had been intended to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Mr. Varone, the head of the company, said it would lose $40,000 by pulling out.

“It is financially devastating but morally exhilarating,” he said in an email.

Millions of Americans are looking for ways to express their disgust with Don's illegal, immoral, unethical behavior. If there's a way to do it I'd be glad to send Doug $50 in support of the decision.

Can you explain the "morally exhilarating" part?

I guess it comes from the MORALS clause that many entertainment contracts have.

Along with breech of condition, that might also apply in this case.

Breach of Condition: Did the contract rely on the company's established reputation or specific personnel, and the new direction fundamentally alters that?

1,000% Ratty. Kudos.

It's no different than having a contract with a well respected corporation, and then they completely change by putting a convicted felon and sexual abuser in charge.
Again, 1,000% Ratty. Kudos.
