We didn’t destroy their democracy, they didn’t have one. They chose the Imam over the Sha. We don’t owe them a ******* thing.
WRONG!
Before 1953, Iran had regular democratic elections.
The US and the British ended that by bribing the Shad to take over and murder tens of thousands of innocent Iranians.

The 1953 Iranian coup d'état, known in Iran as the 28 Mordad coup d'état was the overthrow of Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh on 19 August 1953. Led by the Iranian army and supported by the United States and the United Kingdom, the coup aimed at strengthening the autocratic rule of the shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. A key motive was to protect British oil interests in Iran after its government refused to concede to western oil demands. It was instigated by the United States (under the name TP-AJAX Project or Operation Ajax) and the United Kingdom (under the name Operation Boot). This began a period of dissolution for Iranian democracy and society.

The motivation of the US and the British was to steal the oil that the democratic government had nationalized.
The Shah was the dictator we imposed.
The Ayatollah was then the choice of the Iranian people when they forced the Shah out.
The Iranians would have preferred a return to a secular democracy like with Mosaddegh, but the Iranians did not trust a secular democracy to be strong enough since we had destroyed one before, so they instead went with the theocracy.
Its all OUR fault.
