When I was growing up the 'village' was our neighborhood. Almost all traditional families and everybody's mom 'mommed' all the kids within earshot. All shared pretty much the same values, had the same concepts of right and wrong, attended the PTA meetings and frequent parent/teacher conferences, took their turn as home room mothers, worked to raise money for the band and chorus competitions, etc.

The most we accepted from even the town council, much less the state or federal government, was that kids were required to go to school and would be reported if they didn't show up there. Otherwise it was our parents and shared community values that was the voice in our heads and every single one of us achieved some degree of positive success in our lives.

All children should be blessed in that way.

People do not understand community anymore, and struggle to re-establish it.

The parents say "my children".

The teachers say "my students".

And then there are "the neighborhood kids" and etc etc etc. All valid, and all ways you can care for kids. But ultimately, not parental roles, or even close.
