I've been going over this for decades, there is no "good" way to redistrict, just the lesser of many wrong ways to do it and that includes not doing it...the first time I came across this was back in ther 70's or 80's [so be advised it is from 40-50 year old memory] ...the story was that a Massachusetts congressman name Eldridge Gerry [pronounced "GARY"] had such a drastic shift in demographics in his district that he had no choice but to redraw the district in order to properly represent his constituency and in doing so he took some liberties and drew a map so abstract that one of the women in his office looked at it and said it looked like a salamander hence the term "gerrymander" was born [mispronunciation and all]...
...there have been many ideas as to how this should be addressed [including the end to redistricting which is "gerrymandering" without the abstract imagination] and none seem to satisfy a majority...this is a problem that has been looked into by great minds from both/all sides of the political spectrum and it seems that no one can come up with anything better than what we have now.

The real "surprise" here comes from the fact that Republicans and conservatives have finally figured out that their supplication to Trump and their lack of any substantive policy initiatives are finally coming back to haunt them. So they are going to try and game the system. Not a real shocker.

It's a mid-term redistricting plan that aims to create five additional Republican-leaning congressional districts, which is part of a broader effort to strengthen the GOP's position ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
It's something that Democrats have previously done in their Blue controlled states to the point that Republicans are not represented within their State and Federal roles..
