Can the US Survive an EMP Strike?

An Electro-Magnetic-Pulse much the same as a solar flare will be devastating to all things in America and abroad. This pulse will melt transformers into huge piles of molten metal and melt transmission lines. The devastation will be massive. Power generation in the United States will suddenly be taken back to the 1850's.

Food production will stop. Storages will quickly spoil. Our ability to communicate will be gone as cell towers and above ground lines will melt or be irreparably destroyed. The lasers for our fiberoptics will be destroyed rendering all of our networks useless. Water purification will stop for our towns and cities as will sewage treatment plants.

One fifty kiloton nuclear device detonated high in our atmosphere above the US would create a cascading collapse of our power grids. Vehicle electronics would be melted and make most forms of transportation useless. Areas that are under sea level would again be inundated with water as pumping would cease.

The mass kaos will rip cities apart. Only rural areas will survive the mass destruction.

How do you think America can survive without electronics today?

No it can't...and the Biden Regency could not handle it. There will be mass suicides of young who cannot access the internet or contact their friends.
Do not. I repeat...DO NOT make your way to rural areas.

Some of us would survive but I dont think the country as a whole would.
They've been warned repeatedly about how vulnerable our electric grid is yet they do nothing to harden it.
Even those of us who are prepared will have a difficult time surviving over time. If you dont have a good sized garden and a source of protein you're gonna be fucked once you eat all of your preps.
And of course you'll have people gunning for you that aren't prepared at all.

If a person is old enough, think about what you did when the power went out in your neighborhood as a kid. Back in the 60's or 70's, when the power went out, we simply went outside and played. If it happened at night, we lit candles and read books. But, it wasn't really a big deal.

Now, think about what people do when the power shuts down in their neighborhood nowadays. They're lost. They don't know what to do, as they can't use their electronic devices or watch television. They simply don't know what to do.

If an EMP was to happen to this country, it would result in a whole bunch of people being lost for what to do. Most don't know how to prepare food over a campfire (I do), and most don't know ways to occupy/entertain themselves without their electronics (again, I do).

Unfortunately, we as humans now have become dependent on electronics, almost to the extent that their removal would result in our detriment.

And.......................to take out all our electronics wouldn't really be that hard. Just detonate a nuclear bomb 10 miles above the center of the USA, and the resulting EMP would take out most of the country.

From the Article:

Of further concern is that with EMP warfare, there is a strong incentive to attack first. Because the initial blow can be crippling, the first striker has a huge advantage. This makes EMP strategy more like cyber warfare than Cold War nuclear strategy. During the Cold War, the U.S. and U.S.S.R. relied on the principle of mutual assured destruction. Neither was reckless enough to launch a nuclear attack on the other because it would result in a devastating counterattack. This logic may not work with EMP attacks if the initial strike is sufficiently ruinous.

The October Suprise might not come from democrats. If Putin wanted to, he could employ a high atmosphere nuclear detonation, causing an EMP (Electro-Magnetic-Pulse). IT would send most of the US into darkness very quickly. IF he determines the US did in fact sabotage the Nordstream pipelines, this could be a very real possibility.

It would not be a ground strike, but the devastation and death would be all encompassing very quickly from lack of food, water, and basic necessities. The internal strife would be more devastating than a direct attack and leave the ground ripe for attack and subjugation. With China allied with Putin, nothing is off the table.

If Putin deployed this air burst above international waters, it would have very little effect on the surface, but the EMP would be devastating to over half of the US. IF they deployed two, one east and one west over international water 95% of the US would be in total darkness.

At 10 miles above the surface, the effects of the EMP would still be very strong, but the damage to the surface would be minimal at best. And, it wouldn't take 2 of them, it could be done with just ONE nuke of sufficient size, and right now, both the US and Russia have nukes capable of generating an EMP sufficient to take out the entire US with just one.

Enough heat to melt metal, but we’re going to survive?!?! :rolleyes-41:

Only things that would receive and be unable to deal with the magnetic pulse would melt. Your body will not be affected as it doesn't resonate with these frequencies.

But are they sure of that??? I don't know that it's been tested.

My point was an ICBM entering our territorial waters or air space would create a MAD response. Going beyond our territorial waters, at altitude, would not generate that response but would cripple us. Its playing a game of high states craps... Much as we did during the Cold War...

An EMP doesn't necessarily "melt" things, what it does is reverse the polarity of the electronics by short circuiting them with a power surge. Think about when you have a power surge in your house that damages some electronics (reason why most have surge protectors in their homes). The device doesn't melt, it just doesn't work anymore.

And, like I said, it doesn't really take a whole bunch of nukes to take out the whole US, it can be done with just one.

Some light reading on EMP's if you're interested, and yeah, it's some scary stuff, especially this part........................

A 1.4 Megaton bomb launched about 250 miles above Kansas would destroy most of the electronics that were not protected in the entire Continental United States. During the brief return to atmospheric testing in 1962, a 1.4 megaton nuclear weapon was detonated over Johnston Island at an altitude of about 250 miles. The effects of EMP were observed in Hawaii, 800 miles east of the detonation. Streetlights and fuses failed on Oahu and telephone service was disrupted on the Island of Kaua

Most True Southerners know how to hunt, fish, grow a garden, can food for the winter and the like.
It's people who live in the city and have never been fishing or touched a gun let alone fired one that are going to be the first to die.
We have enough food to get us to the planting season and the heirloom seeds to plant so we should be fine.
Will it be pleasant? Not really but we could survive,we're talking about getting more food so we can make it to the second planting season in case the first seasons plantings fail for whatever reason.

Did we melt in 1859 when the US was struck by an EMP from a solar flare? I suggest you look up what a Carrington Event is...

The emitted energy melted telegraph wires across the US but did not harm humans. (unless they were holding onto the wires at the time)

Very well versed in the physics of this, but thank you for the input..

Good plan, but should be until the HARVEST time, not planting time......otherwise you starve while it's growing

Actually, so am I. Was a member of the NBC teams on the ship (Nuclear, Biological and Chemical warfare), so I had to know about the effects of each and how to deal with it.

Was also a member of the PRP teams, where we loaded nukes onto aircraft, and also had to learn about nukes then. Lots of training from the Navy on that subject.
