Yeah, but unleashing something like that would screw over the whole planet. There is no way to limit it to national borders, all it would take is a single individual who is a carrier to land here. While I kind of understand the logic behind gain of function studies, I think we're better off just waiting for the next jump and dealing with it then. The chances of a 1918-type virus are real but they're also EXTREMELY low.Probably a "Back at you" virus we could infect China with, for giving us the original COVID. All funded by the US government, no doubt.
