As a Virginian I reject any assertion that Virginians died by the thousands to maintain slavery.

In the Civil War, Virginians and other Southerners, most of whom owned no humans, did not fight and die with the notion of making sure rich men could keep their slaves being at the forefront of their minds.

They fought a invasion for their families, homes, and brothers.

Virginia and other states seceded because they supported the rights of the other states to secede against the threat of Union invasion to deny them that right.

A union held together at gun point isn’t a union, it’s a hostage situation.

While you are correct, there is no arguing the fact that the institution of slavery was the cause of the war, and everyone in the Confederacy knew it, whether they personally enslaved people or not.

Were you there?

In the letters my ancestors wrote home there was never the first mention of slavery.....They were more concerned with how their families were fairing. Indeed they asked for small comfort items like socks and such and talked about the poor rations.

Slavery came into play only after the war started, as a concocted emotional imperative to get men to join the union army to fight in a very unpopular war.

The crux of the issue was can a Federal government override what a State wants. Most people then considered themselves citizens of X State rather than an American living in X State.

Unfortunately the topic of the question was the issue of slavery.
