Robert Byrd has been dead for 15 years and participated in the klan in his early 20s
He renounced that participation and had a strong civil rights record as a Senator

So strong, he was endorsed by the NAACP

1. High NAACP voting scores
   • In the 2003–2004 session, Byrd had a 100% voting record aligned with NAACP positions on the bills they tracked.
   • That rating reflects how someone voted on civil-rights legislation, not an endorsement
2. Praise after his death
   • When Byrd died in 2010, the NAACP released a statement saying he had “become a champion for civil rights and liberties” and had consistently supported their civil-rights agenda.

Not many Republicans can make the same claim
