In a republic, supreme power is held by the people through their elected representatives. Democracy as form of government no longer exists but democrat principals such as holding free and fair elections; a pluralistic system of political parties; separation of powers; independence of the branches of government define what we call democratic government.

Names of political parties like the offical names of countries do not define how governments actually operate. Countries that have no free elections call themselves democratic and countries ruled by dictators and monarchies call themselves republics. Names just don't mean much at all.
