wrong you make statements as fact then pretend they were opinions. The US was involved in the Atlantic and it is a matter of historical FACT not opinion. If you had any knowledge on the matter you wouldn't look so stupid challenging others on their statements.

You are being cryptic. We know that the German Navy was sinking cargo ships in the Atlantic Ocean before Pearl Harbour. You say your friend was a Navy commander. Military or merchant? American or British? You also say he was fighting. I'll need a little bit of proof of that or you can just fill in the blanks to clarify my questions.
The story is a bit longer. When he fought the Nazis on a ship, then he was enlisted. He had a university degree and applied to the navy to make him an officer and so he was promoted to Ensign. As the war progressed, as an officer in war, he got rapid promotions and after the war served in the Navy Reserves where he got the rank of Commander and retired.

I don't admire any historical figure... A good historian looks at historical figures like an entomologist looks at a bug in a jar.

If you don't understand why the Communists won the Civil War, then probably you should keep your filthy Mormon Mouth shut about the topic.

Not to mention the topic of my wife.
Since you attacked me first and kept attacking me, get smart and stop attacking me.

I'm sure it is.

You didn't answer the question. You gave the impression that he was fighting the Nazis in the Atlantic BEFORE Pearl Harbour was attacked. That is to say BEFORE the US and Germany had declared war against one another. You have failed to provide the information necessary to know if the American Navy fought in a combat role BEFORE the US and Germany had declared war. That is the issue I want you to clarify. I understand that you are merely relating what your friend told you and that you are not responsible for the validity of his story. However, you should do your best to rememeber what he actually said to you so we can determine whether or not the story is accurate.

Al was then based on the East coast and told me that German boats were sinking ships off the east coast, the Atlantic. He was then on a navy ship that hunted the U-Boats. Al never gave me the impression he was joking. This happened before the Japs bombed pearl harbor. Al almost hit 100 years of age when he died in 1919.

So he was born in 1819? How old are YOU?

I wish you never read my post about my dead friend. What difference can it make to go into your level of detail?
Al was American. US Navy. OFFICER. I told you it was the
Atlantic. Are you planning to write a history of Al? Al never was a Merchant Marine.

WHY THE HELL DO YOU NEED TO GET PROOF? Enlisted American navy serving on a ship in the Atlantic prior to WW2.

Ask Al. Obituary for Alton Richard Melcher at The Neptune Society

You are very confused. You apparently do not understand who was engaged in the war and when they entered it. If you make a statement it has to make sense or it won't be accepted. I can see that you do not know very much about the war. You made a statement that seems untrue but if you qualify the circumstances then there is a possibility that it is true. I'm just trying to help you find the truth.

Al is dead and does not give a damn if you believe his story or not!!!
It is not his story but yours that is in question. I don't know what he told you or what he didn't tell you. I only know what you are telling me now.

Navy commander means military, if you knew anything about WW 2 history, you would know that FDR had USN ships escorting BRITISH convoys halfway across the Atlantic to the so-called MOMP (M Id O cean M eeting P oint. He had issued a “ shoot on sight” order for American warships to attack any German ships. The “British” PBY Catalina that spotted Bismarck was being flown by a USN pilot who was “advising” the RAF Coastal Command crew.

Apparently, you are confused since you don't know about the Nazis subs seen by Americans sinking ships off the Atlantic coast of the USA. Correction it was in 1942 and not in 1941. Al died so I can't ask him the story now.
