They are the two most predominant sects in Islam. Sunnis are supported by Saudi Arabia . Shias are supported by Iran. They don't like each other.

The biggest beef in Iraq was that Saddam was Sunni and most of Iraq was Shia. Yet he allowed the minority Sunni to dominate politics in Iraq. 61% of Muslims in Iraq were Shia, 35% are Sunni.

I spent time in the ME working with and training Kuwaitis and Pakistanis.
