State law defines the area of a polling place and it's protected area. So the laws vary by state.

In Virginia it's defined as 40 feet from the entrace of the polling location.

I’ve heard the term federal government several times in this discussion. Now, it might be my own prejudice speaking here—I realize this is an intellectual discussion, and scientific objectivity is crucial. Without it, nothing useful can come from such conversations. But let me say this first:

But federalism, meaning the division of power between the national government and the state governments, is one of the most important safeguards in our Constitution. It prevents the concentration of power in any single level of government. Concentrated power is dangerous. If a tyrant were able to take control of the national government, the entire country would be at risk.

In a federal system, however, that kind of total control is far more difficult. There will always be states governed by the opposing party, so no one person can gain complete control of the entire governmental structure. Without total control, a dictator cannot truly function as a dictator.
