The Scandinavian countries have made a really strong case that strongly socialist states can be run effectively and provide well for their people. Of course, they aren't pure socialism/communism, there are capitalist elements, but they are closer to the socialist spectrum than the free market capital end of the spectrum.
I have yet to see a counter argument that makes any sense. The mantra that you have to be capitalist to be successful has been shown to be untrue.
I think the big test for our society is going to be unlimited spending in political races. That just might break the perception that our society is a 'just' and 'fair' one, and that it exists for the well being of the citizens.
