Right-Wing Billionaires Behind Mitt Romney

Right-Wing Billionaires Behind Mitt Romney | Politics News | Rolling Stone

They're trying to buy a presidency - and they expect a big payoff on their investment

The undisputed master of Super PAC money is Mitt Romney. In the primary season alone, Romney's rich friends invested $52 million in his Super PAC, Restore Our Future – a number that's expected to more than double in the coming months. This unprecedented infusion of money from America's monied elites underscores the radical transformation of the Republican Party, which has made defending the interests of 0.0001 percent the basis of its entire platform. "Money buys power," the Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman observed recently, "and the increasing wealth of a tiny minority has effectively bought the allegiance of one of our two major political parties." In short, the political polarization and gridlock in Washington are a direct result of the GOP's capitulation to Big Money.

That capitulation is evident in Romney's campaign. Most of the megadonors backing his candidacy are elderly billionaires: Their median age is 66, and their median wealth is $1 billion. Each is looking for a payoff that will benefit his business interests, and they will all profit from Romney's pledge to eliminate inheritance taxes, extend the Bush tax cuts for the superwealthy – and then slash the top tax rate by another 20 percent. Romney has firmly joined the ranks of the economic nutcases who spout the lie of trickle-down economics. "Support from billionaires has always been the main thing keeping those charlatans and cranks in business," Krugman noted. "And now the same people effectively own a whole political party."

Go for it. I have an umbrella, a tarp, and I'm wearing teflon undies.

Of course the left wing millionaires and billionaires supporting left wing candidates and Obama are no bad or cause for concern right? What happened to your call for civility and less partisan postings?

All the rest of the lemmings already sang that verse. Why are you late for choir practice??

There are NO billionaires giving Obama any money?? Wow....that sucks for him! :)

No worries.....that is what the SEIU and ACORN-derived organizations are for.....so he can get US Taxpayer money to fund his reelection!

Did the left wing billionaires behind Obama get a big payoff?

Never mind, I found the answer.

The Cutting Edge News

My favorite!

THE TAX DODGER: Julian Robertson Jr.

Position One of the first hedge-fund titans, Robertson ran Tiger Management Corp. He now takes an ownership stake in new hedge funds, known as "Tiger cubs," directed by former deputies.

Age 80

Fortune $2.5 billion (Forbes rank: 166)

Past Donations More than $1.8 million in lifetime contributions, including $60,100 to John McCain in 2008 and donations to Wall Street-friendly senators like Joe Lieberman and Chuck Schumer.

Current Donations Gave $1.25 million to Restore Our Future – "one of the most important investments I've ever made."

What He Wants Unfairly low taxes. Robertson has embraced tax avoidance as a lifestyle: In 2000, despite living and working in Manhattan, he logged 182 days outside the city – often racing to flee town by midnight – to avoid paying local income tax. Also admits to seeking direct access to the president: "I would expect Mitt Romney to speak to me occasionally," he has said.

How He Lives Owns an apartment overlooking Central Park, estates in New Zealand and Long Island, and vacation hideaways in Sun Valley. Beat back a court challenge to his claim of nonresidency, robbing New York of $27 million in city taxes.

Obama gave tax dodgers jobs in his cabinet.

Krugman is actually complaining that its wrong to spend $1B to talk about an entity that taxes and spends $3.5T?

He's the funniest thing in the papers since Larson stopped "The Far Side"

You know he's kidding, right?

The organizations themselves did not donate , rather the money came from the organizations' PACs, their individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals' immediate families.

What the fuck is wrong with you right wingers? Do you think that we won't read your links because you won't read "anything"? Seriously, dude. You went to all that effort to put together that post and then you look ridiculous - or worse.

I know right wingers don't take responsibility for anything they do. But you really should read your link first. And if you don't know what it means, don't link to it. Even if it has a pretty title. Right wingers leave me flabbergasted. Think this guy even knows what I'm talking about?

And look. Some other idiot named "The T" even thanked him. Damn.

Sure they did. Corporations routinely give donations in the name of employees. If that doesn't work, they "ask" their employees to give donations, and, quite innocently, give them a bonus that matches the amount they donated.

Remember your motto, corporations are eeevulll.

What a great read! Nothing like a good, hard-hitting unbiased report from Rolling Stone! I especially liked the "pet names" they gave these wealthy men and their "crimes".

DR. DRILL: Steven Webster - Crime: first owner of the Deepwater Horizon rig that exploded in the Gulf, unleashing the nation's worst environmental disaster. (probably booby-trapped it before selling it).

THE PYRAMID SCHEMER: Frank VanderSloot - Crime: Owns a "multilevel marketing" firm based in Idaho that sells off-brand cleaning products and nutritional supplements. The FDA has "rebuked" him. Also an anti-gay crusader. (Free Speech? What's that?)

THE VULTURE CAPITALIST: Paul Singer - Crime: buys up "distressed debt" from Africa and South America, then squeezes countries to pay up. (I wonder how many people buy distressed debt and don't try to get the debtor to pay up? Well, they wouldn't be on this list, because they would be broke.)

THE COKE DEALER: William Koch (Clever and clearly unbiased play on words!) - Crime: Global dealer in petroleum coke, a cement-manufacturing fuel that's high in climate-warming carbon dioxide. He wants to "pollute for free". Man, there's a special place in hell for those who don't want to pay to pollute!

Yep, this is really journalism at it's finest.......:eusa_shifty:

$40k vs millions? That makes sense for you? K.

Here's How Mitt Romney Stole $10 Billion
40,000 a plate a 150 or more people that adds up to a minimum 6 million dollars and the final total was probably more. I hate to be the one to break this to you but there are millionaires and billionaires who donate to Obama and the Democrats as well and as far as I know they have never refused a dime from any of them.

Yes. Split betwen 150 people. Not one millionaire kicking over 7-8 figures.

But you somehow think Obama is different guess again.

ahh now thats the PPPoop we know and love.....

Oh, excellent. This totally rocks. Mucho gracias.

The news is especially good for Obama because top Hollywood personalities have the deep pockets needed to make large contributions to the super PACs supporting him. So far, the main super PAC behind Obama, Priorities USA Action, has shown very weak fundraising compared with those backing Romney, raising $4.6 million in the first quarter compared to $21.7 million raised by the biggest PAC backing Romney and $49 million by two conservative groups affiliated with former Bush administration political advisor Karl Rove.

that's fucking sweet
