Sorry - someone getting hit with a pie could only possibly be funny in a slapstick skit where all parties are voluntarily participating in it in order to entertain their audience. THEN it is a gag. There is no "gag" to it when one person is simply assaulted as an unsuspecting victim. Victimizing someone isn't funny. Its just another crime. The individual is invariably assaulted while exercising their free speech rights in a public forum. And frankly, I haven't considered a pie in the face even in slapstick skits funny since I turned 12 or so. When I outgrew Soupy Sales -I outgrew pies in the face as a form of humor.
Soupy Sales (Notice, his guests AGREED to have pies thrown at them, KNEW they were going to have a pie thrown at them. They were never unsuspectingly victimized. Because throwing a pie at an unsuspecting person would have been the crime of assault then too -even on a TV comedy show.)

It doesn't matter what the political views are of the person targeted. It is not only just inappropriate behavior, it is a crime. I don't care what the political views are of the person attacked -it isn't funny to victimize someone in this way. It just embarasses me that we have such assholes in this country who think they have the "right" to assault someone because they disagree with what that person has said. Neither Nader or Coulter pressed charges -but I hope the next person does since it will take that before such morons realize why their behavior amounted to a crime.

The purpose of such an act is NOT to be "funny" by the person throwing it -because only a moral cretin would find it funny to victimize someone in that kind of situation. The real purpose is to use a violent act to silence the political speech of their target, prevent them from exercising their free speech rights - and do so in a way that humiliates them. Which I have never found funny. And yes, throwing an object at an unsuspecting person is an act of violence -not a "gag". Even if the person is not physically injured. There is no such thing as "right" to humiliate another person by means of a physical attack on their person.


The mentality that says "because I disagree with what you say, I am justified in trying to silence your speech by throwing a pie at you and humiliate you" is just a short step from justifying using even more violence to do it the next time.

It's the hypocrisy that bothers me. There's a sense of "Oh well, I can do whatever I want because look at all these high moral positions I take" from a lot of libs. I was reading some old forum posts on a diff forum the other day and I was reading about this event where Ann Coulter had a pie thrown at here. All the libs were like LOL, that's so funny, and I didn't notice anyone having any problem with this woman being assaulted. Sure it was only a pie, but that doesn't mean it wasn't terrifying and that doesn't make it alright. It's that kind of hypocrisy, where normally they'd be all kinds of outraged that a woman was attacked, but hey it's that screechy bitch Ann Coulter so who cares. That's the kind of stuff I don't get.

Two can play this game. What of the conservative shmucks who insist that if you don't agree with them you're an evil, unpatriotic, commie/terrorist? (Remember folks if you think we shouldn't be at war you don't support our troops). What of those who insist that if you think that X violates the establishment clause you hate God, are an evil atheist etc. What of those who insist that if you don't agree to censorship you must not care about the children? I can show you prime examples of conservatives who have a holier than though attitude that you try to pretend all liberals have (one wonders how in all holy hell you were able to find this common theme in an entire group of people, what studies have you conducted to support such an extraordinary claim).

You mean because they used their WORDS to disagree with you? Sorry -that is how its done in this country when people disagree with each other. We aren't talking about exercising your free speech rights versus those with different political views also exercising THEIR free speech rights. I can say I think someone else's opinions are those only a traitor would have. It is fully within my rights to have that opinion AND voice it. Even if you don't like my opinion and disagree with it just as vigorously as I may believe it. And it is within YOUR rights to say you do disagree with that opinion.

But how is that on a par with someone physically attacking Coulter? In fact, it bothers me you think your example amounts to the same thing. What you claim conservatives have said is within their RIGHTS to say it -even if it is an opinion you don't like. Your personal agreement with what someone else said places NO restrictions on their right to say it. But physically assaulting you, even if I do it with pie and even if you are not harmed by my attack -is NOT my right. For any reason whatsoever -but certainly not just because I disagree with your political views. Assault is always a crime -one that carries a jail sentence.
