During Ice Ages, rivers shrank in size because much of earth's atmosphere became locked in ice, and this exposed river sands. The climate was windier then and eolian sand dunes originating from river sands rolled across the landscape. Sometimes these sand dunes buried herds of the extinct flat-headed peccary. Fossils of whole herds have been found in at least 6 states.
