Did you miss how many were taken out?
Fucking idiot.
I haven't seen any confirmed reports that any of the missiles were intercepted. Just one uncorroborated report that 3 of them were intercepted by patriot missiles.
You would think the practice of trying to take out a missile with gun fire would be avoided at all cost. Chances are they would just damage the missile, throwing it off course and possibly landing in heavily populated areas killing lots of innocent civilians. If you are going to take out a missile, do so with something like just Patriot missiles that destroys most of the missile upon impact.
Gunfire? LOL. I don't think you and the OP understand which class of ballistic missiles Iran launched at us the other day.
These were the type of missiles that launch into outer space and then free fall back down onto the target from almost straight overhead doing well over mach 3. You are not going to hit them let alone throw them off course by shooting bullets at them.
And of course Patriot missiles cannot be everywhere, anyways. We only have a limited number of them, so any whining about them not being at that particular base is a non-starter from the get go.
Also, the problem we had with the Patriots is that they were designed to shoot down aircraft, not missiles. In the gulf war they had several intercepts and worked as designed, they exploded when they got within a certain proximity of the missile. However, the warheads would just go hit the target anyways.
So they came up with the PAC-3 Patriot missile with hit to kill technology, where it directly hits the incoming missile instead of using a proximity fuse. But that is still untested against these types of missiles.
