When he sobered up, he realized what a butthead he had been.
Since then, he has genuinely tried to be a better person.
He's kind of like a real life Earl Hickey (My Name is Earl).

People who have gone astray, and then try to live right,
can sometimes be more effective at leading others back to goodness
than those who have "never gone astray."
Others who need to be led back to righteousness
can sympathize with such people,
and accept them as a REALISTIC role model.

In fact, some people who have "never gone astray"
are so prideful about it that they fail to realize that
EVERYONE has gone astray - including them!

Their refusal to accept the fact that they've gone astray
