USMB Coffee Shop IV

I’m fine, and feeling very well. I’m in the DC area right now. Didn’t expect the weather to be so chilly. All the spring blossoms are emerging. They were in Europe too, in particular the magnolias.
Good to hear my friend. DC is actually an amazing city to visit. Where all do you plan to visit?

.

Come to think of it, we haven't heard from Hossfly for a long time. Anybody know what's up?

And it's been a LONG time since we've seen saveliberty.

The others I have seen more recently, I thing.

.
Last I heard he was in the hospital but recovering. For some time he had reacted to our posts in the Coffee Shop and elsewhere but had not been posting much himself. I miss him.

Want to go to the Spy Museum this time.

Coming from Europe and the excellent public transport there, l’m finding it difficult to get around, and have to be driven to a Metro station, or a supermarket. I’m used to walking to the shops and bakeries every day, and don’t buy in bulk.

I don’t want to hire a car, as l don’t want to drive. Half of them don’t seem to know what they’ve doing. Around here anyway.

Well unfortunately American drivers, especially those in big cities, are probably not the poster children for excellence in driving. :) (And yes, Americans don't design even small towns to make living on foot all that easy or convenient. We could learn a lot from other countries in that regard.)

What I meant though was do you plan to spend all your time here in DC or do you have other destinations in mind?

Yes, l’m staying in the DC area. Resting a lot after that bout with illness.

Usually l go up to New York, but might give it a miss this time.

So do I.

I guess I've missed a lot by not spending more time in the Coffee Shop.

.

Well you're here now and I for one am enjoying that a lot. :)
.

I have given up being annoyed for Lent (among other things) and hanging out in politics is helping me strengthen my will.

But I have to admit, it's getting more boring there by the day.

Still there are good people here at USMB and you can find reasoned discussions and fun discussions every now and then. I'm enjoying the thread re Smuckers Blueberry Syrup that has now morphed into a discussion on huckleberries. I enjoy those kinds of discussions a lot.

I love those kind of conversations.

I can't eat blueberries because they are very high in oxalic acid.

Blueberries are an enigma it seems. Most health food articles have them at or near the top of the list of super foods of health benefits. Then you see these 'scare' articles on Facebook all the time warning people not to eat them. But most cardiologists and internists recommend them in moderations despite people claiming to be doctors telling seniors not to eat them.

However I also thought raspberries were high in oxalates but blueberries low in oxalates? Blueberries do have a high sugar content that should be considered and for sure those allergic or intolerant in other ways should not eat them. But for most people they are healthy and nutritious if you don't overdo them.

Blueberries are not as high as raspberries. It's been a while since I looked at the data, but back when I was first considering that my condition might be related to oxalate, I shaped this mental picture which led me to lay off all berries except strawberries. A pity too, because we had a small patch of blackberries, and there's little I love more than the taste of a ripe blackberry!

Raspberries are very high in oxalates.
Blackberries moderate so should be limited but probably don't have to be avoided entirely unless your doctor recommends that.
Blueberries and strawberries are pretty much identical in oxalates and are both very low.

I use this kind of information in my kitchen as I cook for a wide variety medical conditions among the people who join us at our table. So I have to be aware of the triggers for diabetes and IBS and such, aware of the gluten intolerant, know who is allergic to what, etc. along with those who have personal dislikes and taboos--I cook for vegetarians and vegans and my Aunt Betty who hates most cheese and my daughter-in-law who won't touch rice and my daughter who is opposed to most pasta in any form including egg noodles. :)

In short, my kitchen has become something of a science lab. :)

WHAAAAAT? I miss those blackberries so much, but they do not grow wild where I live now, and when you buy them in the store, they're never ripe. If I found that it's worth it, I might try planting some. My neighbor's raspberries are really prolific!

If I could be so privileged, I would love to know where you get your info. I've been using the same source for several years, and my source obviously disagrees with yours. I imagine that your source may be more accurate than mine. If I could put a few foods back in my diet, I'd love the added variety. I am completely off of grains, nuts and legumes and it's hard.

Thanks

I use a ton of different sources because I have to know about so many different kinds of foods and what should be avoided for this or that person.

For my kidney problem and IBS people I consult this one a lot:
