I say we keep it. And then we create separate hot lines for all types of issues. Like schizos. Depression. Bipolar disorder. BPD. Divorce. ETC

There are already all kinds of hotlines. So i cant find it in myself to give a shit about one going dark.
This shouldnt be a federal thing in the first place.

You can laugh at and snub mental health issues all you want. I can only hope people with that kind of selfish and narrow POV remain in the minority in this country

I understand debate about trans in sports and locker rooms etc. but why in the world would anybody end a crisis hotline that receives over 2000 calls a day? These are youth who are suicidal and in crisis reaching out for help. And there’s no plan or effort to replace the assistance with anything.

Play your political games all you want but cutting off a lifeline to people in need of help is just cruel.

It’s not fake news, it’s exactly what is happening. The are removing a specific option “3” that deals directly with LGBTQ issues. Yes there are still other options and support available. My question is why take away a specific focus that was receiving a ton of engagement.

Reaching out for help is a very difficult thing. Especially for kids. For those struggling with LGBTQ issues knowing they are calling to speak with a person who is trained and familiar with their struggles is a reassuring thing. Calling a general number is a crap shoot. What if they get on the line with a conservative evangelical counselor that believes homosexuality is a sin?

It just doesn’t make sense to take away or even reduce a service that was helping a significant number of kids on a daily basis

To your other point, if you don’t think the support being given was effective then initiate better training and support tactics and educate the staff to execute.

Ending the line does nothing but make the situation worse and leave kids in crisis with one less resource, all for petty political reasons. It’s disgusting

What specific issues? If you are in crisis, and thinking of killing yourself and your gay, is that somehow different then if you are wanting to kill yourself and you are straight? Shouldn't we be focusing on the not killing yourself, instead what you do in your bed room?

Not all mental health issues are strictly about suicide. Suicide is the end product for a variety of issues that build up in people who can’t deal with the pain

June 17, 2025

On July 17, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline will no longer silo LGB+ youth services, also known as the “Press 3 option,” to focus on serving all help seekers, including those previously served through the Press 3 option.

The Press 3 option was established as a pilot program in Fiscal Year 2022 under a government agreement with a third party. The Fiscal Year 2023 Omnibus included a Congressional directive for $29.7 million to fund the specialized services. Federal funding in FY24 for the Press 3 services increased to $33 million. As of June 2025, more than $33 million in funds have been spent to support the subnetworks, fully expending the monies allocated for 988 Lifeline LGB+ subnetwork services.

Everyone who contacts the 988 Lifeline will continue to receive access to skilled, caring, culturally competent crisis counselors who can help with suicidal, substance misuse, or mental health crises, or any other kind of emotional distress. Anyone who calls the Lifeline will continue to receive compassion and help.

Basically it cost millions just to have the option 3, which is completely unnecessary since the line is already set up to handle all crisis and sucide prevention. Trump is just saving American tax payers dollars for a completely unneeded option.

700 calls? out of a populaton of 340.1 million?

With a cost of 33 million? How much does that break down per call of tax payer money? Almost $48K per call? and how many didn't commit sucide? what's the success rate? That's literally more then the yearly salary of many publc school teachers, maybe we should fund schools, instead of a hot line. and people could just not tell the call line they are gay before talking to a crisis manager?

If there are kids in crisis there are counselors and doctors and therapists available free of charge in some cases... the federal government does not belong in the "hotline" business.... Are the people answering calls licensed doctors and therapists?... if they are this program must be expensive as hell.... and if they are not a lot of damage can be done....
