Trump says absentee ballots and mail-in ballots are different (Politifact says that's FALSE)

In Florida, for instance, where Trump is registered to vote, the term "absentee" isn't even in the law. They're all call vote-at-home" and everyone can vote by mail even if they live in a different state.
Trump lied about the reason for him voting by mail being that he's in DC. The reason is because everyone in Florida can vote by mail if they wish.

Trump also lied about "absentee" ballots being processed differently and more safely than "mail" ballots.
It's all the same shit.

In 2016, for instance, the Florida Legislature unanimously voted to change the phrase "absentee" to "vote-by-mail," in order to ease confusion among voters who mistakenly believed that they had to be away from home to request a ballot by mail. Some election advocates now use the term "vote at home," because ballots in some states can be dropped off in person at designated lockboxes rather than mailed.

So when Trump says he’s an absentee voter in Florida because he’s "at the White House," that’s not accurate. It doesn’t matter where he is; Trump, like any other registered Florida voter, can cast a ballot without going to an in-person site.
.
Politifact slipped in the magic word "requested" to do a false comparison. There are (3) types of mail-in ballots:
1. No request needed, the state send out ballots to all registered voters
CO, HI, OR, UT WA
2. Voters request ballots but no excuse for absentee voting is needed:
(the other 28 states)
3. Voters request mail-in ballots AND an excuse IS NEEDED:
AL, AR, CT, DE, IN, KY, LA, MA, MI, MO, NH, NY, RI, SC, TN, TX, WV

Mail in ballots require requests in most states, which is contrary to what he claimed, otherwise known as a lie. Why would he all of a sudden have a problem with the remaining 5 states who have been doing mail voting for years?

The fact is, many States are scrapping the request requirement using Covid as an excuse. If you can safely stand in line at the grocery store, you can stand in line at the polls.

.
Which states are scrapping the request requirement?

CA is sending ballots to all registered voters, GA is sending ballot requests to all registered voters and the list goes on. Here's a link that describes procedures in each State. The commies in TX sued to get ballots sent to all registered voters and lost in court, absentee ballots will have to be requested.

.
Fantastic article, thank you.

California is legit.
Sending applications is miles different than sending ballots because you still have to apply to get the ballot.
The lawsuit in Texas wasn’t about sending ballots, it was whether the “illness or disability” restriction to vote absentee applied to people not wanting to get COVID. The court’s reply was “not exactly by maybe, we will let you decide” oh and if you decide wrong you may go to jail.

So what's to stop people who just moved into a house from completing applications for the former resident?

.
Didn’t the former tenants change their registration? They still need signature matches. Doesn’t seem like a crime the average Joe is going to commit just because they get someone else’s application. That’s a lot of jail time for very little benefit.

Do you really think clerks processing 10s of thousands of requests will be checking signatures that close? And folks are prosecuted virtually every election, mailing ballot applications to everyone, just presents the opportunity, some won't pass it up. The question is, how many will get away with it long enough for the fraudulent vote to be counted?

.
Why not? They already do when I vote in person and that’s a much bigger influx of people.

Don't know what State you're in, but when I vote in TX, the only thing they check is my ID, I sign, but they don't even look at it. But your trying to draw a false equivalency between hundreds of poll workers checking vs. a few clerks in an office is duly noted.

.
Who said they have just a few clears in an office?

I do, have you ever been to your local registrars office?

.
Yes but not while they’re opening mail in ballots.

How many clerks were there?

.
A few, but again, it wasn’t during an election.

Oh, ok, so you think experienced people magically appear during an election?

.
Experienced people? I assume they can get volunteers just like at polling places.

Yeah, you know what happens when you "assume"

..
That makes two of us.

LOL

.

Fact is neither of us really know the precise process. A place like Texas has limited absentee so it’ll be totally different than a place like Florida. I searched, but found no definitive information.

I do know some States are still trying to make changes 3 months from the election ala CA. Like I said earlier, LA county has 112% of eligible voters registered. And they made ballot harvesting legal. What could possibly go wrong at all levels, but specifically at the congressional level.

.
From what I’ve read, California is only sending ballots to active voters. Not all registered voters are getting ballots.

It’s not like Trump has a snowball’s chance in hell in California anyway.

From the link I provided earlier:

California: California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) announced in May that the state would be sending mail-in ballots to every registered voter in the state, a decision that’s been challenged by the state’s Republican Party.

.
Let’s go to the actual bill:
(j) Consistent with paragraph (2) of subdivision (a) of Section 2226 of the Elections Code, and with the longstanding interpretation by state and local elections officials of Sections 4000 to 4108, inclusive, of the Elections Code governing the conduct of all-mailed ballot elections and of Section 3005 of the Elections Code governing mailed ballot precincts, nothing in this act is intended, and shall not be construed, to mean that a voter with an inactive voter registration status shall receive a vote by mail ballot for the November 3, 2020, statewide general election.

Holes, so many holes. From your link:

This bill would require county elections officials to mail a ballot to every registered voter for the November 3, 2020, statewide general election
<<snip>>
Existing law requires the Secretary of State to establish, by January 1, 2020, a system that a county elections official may use to allow a voter to track the voter’s vote by mail ballot through the mail system and processing by the county elections official. County elections officials are not required to use the system, however.
<<snip>>
(d) Notwithstanding subdivisions (a) and (b), for the statewide general election to be held on November 3, 2020, any vote by mail ballot cast under this division shall be timely cast if it is received by the voter’s elections official via the United States Postal Service or a bona fide private mail delivery company by the 17th day after election day and either of the following is satisfied:

17 days for ballot harvesting, like I said, what could possibly go wrong?

.
You forgot to list the conditions in which a ballot would be allowed to be counted 17 days after Election Day.

Ballot harvesting isn’t one.

Yeah, care to guess how man ballots will magically appear in various post offices across the State on day 15? Especially in areas where there are close elections for congress.

.

Without a postmark?

Only envelopes with stamps get postmarks, postage paid don't.

.
That’s not true. Ballots all should get postmarked when they’re received. There’s been some isolated episodes of them not getting postmarked which is a concern of the electoral commission.

Oh right, like the postal processing machines will be upgraded to know the difference. Think the Al Franken election on steroids.

.
No upgrades, pretty sure that’s how they’ve always worked. I don’t believe your claims about how they aren’t postmarked.

Well child, check your mail and see how many post paid pieces (ie no stamp) have a postmark.

What I would expect from a moron. The goal is to keep people apart as much as possible. They have to buy groceries but elections can be done by other means other than standing in line. A clear majority favor mail in voting.

Groceries can be purchased by other means as well, the fact is, if you commies didn't see an advantage in wholesale mail in ballots it wouldn't be happening.

There is a difference....an absentee voter has to request the ballot and there is a paper trail to that individual....mass vote by mail doesn't even have that safeguard...the democrats can simply go through the voter rolls for dead people, fill out ballots for them and send them in.....there would be no way to know they are dead until after a new President is elected.

That is the difference and why we can't allow vote by mail fraud. On top of the actual real world experience of the failure of the U.S. post office to handle even a few million votes for primaries ...they can't get that right so they can't get 100 or so million ballots by mail..

No they are not. Even Barr admitted he has seen very few cases of voter fraud.

That's because it's a State crime and very few States are even looking for fraud. TX is prosecuting more and more every election.

If mail in voting allowed people to cheat why would it be more possible for Democratic voters to cheat an less possible for Republicans? that makes zero sense????????

LMAO

I will be voting in person because we have plenty of polling places in my town & the lines are not miles or hours long. We would not be having this problem if people were not being blocked from their right to vote by not enough polling places & workers to man them.

Most States don't have the infrastructure to handle millions of mail in ballots. They will sacrifice quality control to try to handle the volume. That is an open invitation to fraud. You commies are seeing the lack of enthusiasm for Biden and are hoping if you drop a ballot in peoples, lap they'll fill it out. The truth is you really don't care who fills them out.

Absentee voting means voters request ballots.
All mail-in voting means ballots are automatically sent to all registered voters, see the difference?
That's not true in every state. My state, for example, is sending me mail-in ballots because I requested them.

NV just changed their law, they will be mailing ballots to ALL active voters and they legalized ballot harvesting. Other States are considering doing the same 3 months from the election.

Correct. The linked article shows what each state is doing.
My point is that the prior statement "Absentee voting and mail-in voting is exactly the same thing." is WRONG.
The only difference is a reason is needed for absentee ballots while no reason is needed for vote-by-mail ballots. That's a distinction without a difference.
Not exactly right.
1. Absentee ballots are REQUESTED by current voters. All other current voters vote in-person. Very little chance for fraud.
2. Mail-in voting means all registered voters are sent ballots automatically. Typically voter rolls are very outdated with many errors, so void ballots are flying all over the place, that are easy to "harvest" and send back in. Absentee is better.

There is no "false comparison". You made distinctions with no difference.
Each requires the recipient to be a registered voter and each ballot is processed the same upon return.
