Wrong. Since Russia used to have some of its nuclear weapons in the Ukraine, the Ukraine has to be inside of Russia's defense grid.
That means that if first strike nukes were launched from the Ukraine, Russia could not detect them until they went off.
That could destroy Russia's retaliatory capability.
So then Russia can never allow the government of the Ukraine to not be friendly with Russia.
Putin has absolutely no choice now that Zelensky has declared he is a traitor to Russia.
Now Putin has to remove the leadership in Kyiv entirely.
It is not Putin's fault. And the Baltics and Poland are not at all similar, in that they are outside Russia's defense grid.

2. Ukraine has no nukes, nor first strike nukes like Russia's Oreshnik missile. Ukraine is not a threat to Russia.

3. Even if Ukraine joined NATO it would not be a threat to Russia. Putin won't get control of Ukraine, his army is bogged down.

4. Putin made a major blunder invading Ukraine, he should accept the peace deal and call it a win.

The Russians go back to 900 AD when Kyiv was the capital of Russia.
The capital of Russia did not move to Moscow until the Mongol invasion of 1200.
But the Ukraine was always part of Russia until the Treaty of Versailles in 1920.
The ethnic Polish became the majority around Kyiv in 1600 when they tried to invade, but they were defeated around 1700.
