This time classic cars are under the government's microscope. The proposed bill aims to restrict the driving of classic cars to the weekends.

(You know, for "safety reasons")

Does any liberal want to call this one a conspiracy theory?

And as we know, when one liberal state does something to take away freedoms, other liberal states quickly follow. It's the hive mentality which has been discussed on here.

You will own nothing, and you will be happy.

Is this about "old-timers - classic cars as such, or just in regards to a tax benefit aka paying less vehicle tax via registering a car as a collectors car?

Minnesota’s HF 3865 proposes restricting classic and collector vehicles to weekend daytime use and specific events, while clarifying registration and operational rules.

Overview of HF 3865

House File 3865, introduced on March 2, 2026, aims to revise Minnesota’s laws regarding classic, collector, and street rod vehicles. The bill primarily focuses on operational limits, registration requirements, and clarifying the use of collector plates b105country.comb105country.com+2. It is designed to ensure that these vehicles are not used for general transportation, while providing explicit examples of permitted activities.

Key Provisions

  • Operational Restrictions: Vehicles with collector plates would be allowed on public roads only during daylight hours on Saturdays and Sundays. Exceptions include parades, exhibitions, car shows, and organized club activities b105country.comb105country.com+2. Weekday drives, evening outings, informal meet-ups, and test drives after maintenance would generally be prohibited b105country.comb105country.com+1.
  • Registration Requirements: Owners must register vehicles as collector items, pay a $25 one-time fee, and submit an affidavit confirming the vehicle’s status fastdemocracy.comfastdemocracy.com. Vehicles must be 20 years or older and manufactured after 1935 to qualify for collector plates b105country.comb105country.com.
  • Scope: The bill applies to classic cars, vintage vehicles, street rods, military vehicles, and classic motorcycles cbtnews.comcbtnews.com+1.
  • Clarifications: HF 3865 standardizes language across statutes, replacing older terms and providing examples of acceptable use, but does not expand or restrict the law beyond existing general transportation prohibitions aaca.orgaaca.org.

Community Response

The bill has sparked significant debate among Minnesota car enthusiasts:

  • Opponents argue that the restrictions limit personal freedom, reduce participation in car culture events, and could negatively impact local businesses that support collector vehicles cbtnews.comcbtnews.com+1.
  • Supporters claim the bill provides clarity, preventing misuse of collector plates for daily transportation cbtnews.comcbtnews.com+1.
  • Organizations like the Antique Automobile Club of America have encouraged owners to voice opposition to the bill during committee hearings aaca.orgaaca.org.

Current Status

As of April 2026, HF 3865 has been introduced and referred to the Transportation Finance and Policy Committee. The bill includes amendments clarifying operational examples but does not fundamentally change the existing liberal allowances for collector vehicles fastdemocracy.comfastdemocracy.com+1. The final decision will rest with the Minnesota governor after legislative approval.

Summary

HF 3865 seeks to formalize and clarify the use of collector vehicles in Minnesota, emphasizing weekend and event-based operation while maintaining existing prohibitions on general transportation. While it addresses regulatory clarity, it has raised concerns about restricting the enjoyment and culture surrounding classic cars b105country.comb105country.com+2. Classic car owners should monitor the bill’s progress and consider participating in public hearings or advocacy efforts.

Here's an article on the thread topic -

Minnesota seems to have a bizarre complex number plate system.

Somalian FRAUD to the tune of BILLIONS of dollars, no problem.
Classic cars?
NOOOOOOOO :aargh:
The governance of Minnesota is completely INSANE.
🙄

This has been around for decades and the way it is in many states. You can drive whatever you want as long as you don't put the special (cheap) license on the car.

This is why citizens in the U.S in particular must hold the feet of officials to the fire. Focus on civil liberties always, or you will destroy your nation.

Judeo-Christian values protected the West and allowed us to thrive in a capitalist environment. There are MANY who wants this gone. This is not a conspiracy theory, this is the communism dream and China leading the charge has been far more effective in Western influence than Russia was.

If the West had never allowed China into the WTO or allowed the same massive trading it does, China would have already have gone the way of the U.S.S.R.

Democrats stick their nose into every aspect of our personal lives.

After THIRTY YEARS of paying registrations and other taxes why not just call the vehicles "Classics" and let them see out their final years in a dignified retirement.
