For those who have living in the middle east, you learn everything is about religion. Greed, envy and such is there too, but religion is the foundation for everything in the area.

In the US and the west in general, there is a separation between religion and government. In the middle east everything revolves around religion and in many countries about he balance of religion in government or the threat of genocide of the smaller faiths.

It is a different world over there. For all the modernization and progress, religion always involved. Belonging to right religion, belonging to the wrong religion, taking advantage of other religions, gaining more power for your religion. It controls jobs, homes, services, travel, food, clothing, laws, speech, actions, schools, elections, military................

Politics is religious based first and party loyalties second. You cannot jump from party to party but have to vote within your faith. Some countries have several dozen parties instead of just two to five.

I understand that people outside don't grasp the complexities. Many living there don't always understand. It is not just divisions of religious groups but between the different denominations and sects as well.

In Lebanon, the president is maronite, prime minister is sunni, speaker shite, etc. Lebanon has more than 20 religions and 18 of them are represented in government. No one religion control the country. Right now hamas wants their puppet to be president and the sunni/maronite (march 14 coalition) is opposed. Country has been without a president for too long now. Government is at an impasse. Not only does the lack of government stink but the streets are lined with garbage, there is a heath catastrophic there now.

Iran is a theocracy. The ayatollahs rules and the president acts in accordance to the faith.

In Syria the alwaites and baath party ruled, while the sunni majority struggled for representation. Christians, kurdish sunni, yazidis and druze fell lower down as protected subservient.

Iraq was also slit between sunni, shite and kurds.
