Who are the remnant of Israel? They are the believing Israelites within the nation of Israel. They are at times hidden within Israel. Why are they hidden? Simply because God made covenants with the whole house of Israel as a nation. Thus all in Israel were under those covenants which involved the law, the sacrifices, the holy and feast days.
So, in appearance, all were acting as the people of God. But, all were not the people of God. And a times, the unbelieving in Israel infected the nation of Israel and brought her into their unbelief. Yet, all the while keeping up the appearance as the people of God by keeping the demands of the law.
(Isaiah 1:2) "Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me."
(Isaiah 1:4) "Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward."
(Isaiah 1:9) "Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah."
Understand, the intent of this thread is not to bring condemnation to the Israel of God. It is to discuss the truth about the nation of Israel and the believing within it who are the 'remnant of Israel'
Even the great prophet Elijah misunderstood it. Twice, after he destroyed all the prophets of Baal, he complained to the LORD that he alone was left in all of Israel who believed and followed God.(1 Kings 19:10) (1 Kings 19:14)
And God answered him. (1 Kings 19:18) "Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him."
Can the truths learned of this remnant be applied to the Church? Of course they can...as long as it is remembered that here I am talking about the remnant of Israel. And that the Church does not replace Israel as that remnant.
