No, they're more subtle about it. It's like the difference between Obama and Trump. Obama is eloquent and gracious, whereas Trump is vulgar and crude - but under the veneer he was just as divisive. And clearly his "in your face" comments ("Elections have consequences!") were meant to provoke. And aren't tranny celebrations in the White House meant to tweak noses? That's certainly how they're taken by conservatives.
As a libertarian, I can't help but observe that the real problem is the unfortunate consensus that government is there to "run" society, rather than merely keeping the peace. Each side wants to force its values on the other. Once you go there, once you've conceded to the idea that the government is there to tell us how to live, then it becomes imperative to control the government, whatever it takes. Whatever lies you have to tell, whatever crooked shit you have to engage in - if you don't want to live under the thumb of the "other side", you have to take over yourself.
"I'd rather be a hammer than a nail" - that's how they see things. They're no longer interested in generally preventing government from "hammering". Than just want to be swinging the hammer.
