Religious history is full of people who have always believed in angels, spiritual beings serving as intermediaries between the sacred and the earthly.

In Western religions, benevolent spirits have always been called “Angel”, as opposed to evil spirits. In the East and in ancient traditions, the difference is less well defined, spiritual beings can be benevolent or malicious depending on the situation.

The term “angel” comes from the Greek “angelos”, equivalent to the Hebrew word “malakh” which means “messenger”. So the angels are literally heavenly messengers, sent by God to reveal to us the purpose and destiny of man.

Angels according to traditions

According to Western tradition, a war between angels took place before the creation of the world. The proud Lucifer questioned the supremacy of God, he and his acolytes were then cast out of paradise by the angels who remained faithful. Lucifer then becomes the prince of darkness and his fallen angels demons.

Since then, the forces of light and darkness have waged an eternal war for the human soul. In this war, the angels protect the divine nature of men against the pits, and desecrate the temptations of the devil.

The Christian, Judaic and Islamic traditions hold that the primary role of angels is to praise God and to submit to his will. Bearers of divine will, they intervene with men, sometimes helping them to obtain fat and certain celestial favors, sparing the weak and punishing the wicked.

From the beginning of the Judaic tradition angels take human form, but in the 3rd century AD, the Judaic conception of angels evolved into a concept of disembodied spirit.

In Ancient Egypt, the wings represented spiritual nature, and for many centuries Christian art depicted angels with winged human bodies.

So if God is responsible for all of these events, what could stop him from creating beings who live like him in a non-physical reality? Today one thing is certain, all of these stories are scientifically possible.
