The Masters

I'm so happy for him. He's the guy I always expected to be better than he was. FINALLY he reached the potential we all thought he'd reach. He won all 4 masters? Grand slam they call it? It's like being a EGOT. Actually better. Only 4 other people have done it. That puts Rory up there on a very elite level.

He's already one of the only golf names I know. And if you would have asked me I would have said "he never reached his full potential" but now I will never say or think that again. Now he's certainly a HOF golfer. He probably was before this win but this solidifies it.

U.S. Open in 2011, the PGA Championship in 2012, the Open Championship (British Open) in 2014, and the PGA Championship again in 2014

Has it been 11 years since his last major win? I bet he NEVER thought he'd win another one.

Again, soooo happy for him.
He's the only European golfer to own the career Grand Slam. He and Scheffler are probably going to be the top golfers in the world for awhile. He could have become a billionaire by going to on the LIV tour but he has stuck by the PGA and it's traditions. Like you say he was already in the HOF but the Master's win puts him in historic company.

I'm not a fan of McElroy.

I went to the Masters for the Wed practice round and Thurs opening round. Augusta National is spectacular. If you've never been you really need to make the effort. The grounds there are immaculate. The grass almost looks fake. It is far and away the best run sporting event on the planet. Parking is free. Food and drinks are incredibly cheap. Scored passes for Berkman's Place. The best "golf sports bar" ever! They have four greens there that are exact copies of greens out on the course that you can putt on (with actual Augusta caddies reading the putt for you!). Four restaurants...bar stocked with the best scotches and bourbons out there and it's all free! (Well...free if you pay the ten grand to be a member for the week!)

Watched a lot of the tournament from the left side of the 16th hole. It's where the players "Skip It!" during practice rounds! Totally stoked that Rory finally got the monkey off his back. My friend that works at Augusta says that he's by far the most popular player among the members and staff of Augusta National.
Now you have piqued my interest in going to the Masters again! I wanted to go with my son 3 years ago but the price freaked out my wife. Could I ask what you paid for Wed-Thur passes? Thanks for the interesting post!

I'm not a fan of McElroy.
Why not? He's such a likable person from what I can tell.

I'm not even a big golf fan but I've always been a fan of his. Back when Tiger was great, I expected Rory to be his main competitor and he just didn't win enough for me to consider him a rival of Tiger's.

And it's been over 10 years since Rory won a major so I thought he was at the end of his career and might not ever win another major. So I was very happy to turn it on yesterday to see he was on top. Then he wasn't. Then he was. Then he fucked up on the 18th and had to play sudden death. I KNEW he was going to miss that last putt.

Glad to see he beat that other guy. The guy he beat looks like a Nazi. LOL.

McElroy cheated on his wife many times.

He banged Amanda Balionis

There are many more like me.

On Redit I found a good response to why some hate Rory. Same reason they hate Lebron and Tom Brady and Tiger. Because they are the face of their sports.

Can someone explain the random hate for Rory McIlroy?

I just feel like early in his career Rory was generally well liked but in the last few years I've noticed quite the uptick in random hateful comments towards him. Even though Rory always appears to be a class act in interviews?

Is this mostly because he is the face of the PGA at the moment and he just has to take the heat for it? Seems to be a general phenomenon with sports in general like LeBron or whoever takes up the spotlight for a particular sport.

I also think maybe the PGA vs LIV manufactured rivalry might have something to do with it? I know he's been outspoken about that but it also feels like the PGA executives have done a terrible job at aligning themselves with their own players causing unneeded backlash.

Out of all the players on tour I guess I just have a hard time understanding why people love shitting on him?

Maybe I should just chalk it up to sports and fandom being mercurial in nature?

OR

Rory always gets one of the biggest if not the biggest cheers of the day when he steps on a tee box so I wouldn’t let the bots and people on twitter pushing their agenda make you think otherwise. You only had to hear the massive cheers he got on the 18 th hole today even tho he was going to beat a Scot in Scotland.

Are you a Russian?

He tells the truth about Saudi Arabia and his opinion of LIV. He gets smack here occasionally and regularly on twitter.

Im not saying there is a coordinated and paid pro-Russia and pro- Saudi presence on social media but im not saying there isnt either

Smart. Outspoken. Honest. Human. He’s too real for some. He’s underachieved for others. We’re lucky to have him. Hear hear Rory!

One guy said this: I’m also kind of tired of hearing about how the guy is due for a major and how he’s going to definitively win this next one. Rory hasn’t won a major in nearly a decade, I’m not getting excited about a guy that almost wins and never actually does it.

I'm not a fan of McElroy.
He always had a reputation of folding under pressure, but this time he came thru.
He was putting like crap on Sunday, but he barely got the win because of a great shot during the playoff.
He's finally gotten that demon off his back.
He's one of only 6 players to win the grand slam, including Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Tiger Woods.

BTW, I watched the final round at the Masters when Jack came back and won it for the last time.
I was studying for the GA Real Estate exam at my new home in August GA. This was a couple of years after I enlisted into the Army. I was stationed at Ft Gordon GA.

This is even better, Rory will be playing only an hour from his hometown here, I think this major will be just as big for him as the Masters. I kind of like either him or Shane Lowry to win here in July.
