As a younger man, I read a lot about the US Silent Service during WW2. I remember reading about Cmdr. Samuel Dealey being awarded the Medal Of Honor. During the latter half of 1944 and in 1945, US submarines had to work harder and take more risks to find targets. This one was sunk in 900 meters of water near the Phillipines in August 1944. All hands were lost. Fitting for remembrance on a Memorial Day Weekend.

The bravery of submariners should be an inspiration for all of us.

In my mind, the CSS Hunley is the most interesting and astounding tale of American submariners, their bravery, and willingness to risk their lives to support a war effort.

The best seller "Shadow Divers" 2004 was an account of amateur divers John Chatterton and Richard Kohler diving on a mystery sub off the New Jersey coast. Three divers died in the effort to identify the sub that turned out to be an unrecorded sinking of a German WW2 sub close to the U.S. coast.
