And in South Australia, where that is not the case, and renewables and storage have been rapidly developed, the grid is not only far more robust, but the wholesale price is significantly reduced.

In South Australia, wholesale electricity prices declined in the fourth quarter of 2024. The average price was $53 per megawatt-hour, down from $114/MWh in the previous quarter and $80/MWh in the same quarter of 2022. For the full year, prices fell 44 per cent1. The falls indicate that the global gas price shocks are easing, and that renewable energy is driving down costs in South Australia2. The administered prices cap wholesale prices at $600 per MWh, and South Australia prices fell 32% in 20243.
