To be honest, I do not have enough facts to provide a truly objective reply, just my subjective memories and opinions. On this note, I believe that a somewhat monopolistic and subjective MSM media has engineered a positive picture of Cuomo on this, and of course the rw media has presented us with the worst case perspective.

I give some legitimacy to a positive and supportive MSM, however most of what they did was just air his press conferences. It wasn't analysis and interpretation from reporters that excelled him it was his own words and messaging. So I'm trying to discuss what about that whether it be his style or his content or other factors that may have contributed to the popularity.

I think yard dog's post about how he is a strong politician has merit, but I'd also add that it wasn't necessarily the most objective media coverage. Often, its what the media keeps quiet that makes bias work, not just what they do say. Only a select few people actually do objective evaluations of what the media feeds us, so both sides of the media tend to get their way with their lefty or righty base. Cuomo really is a strong politician though, regardless of if he is good or evil, and this goes a long way in our current political landscape.

Cuomo definitely did not face the same kind of scrutiny as Trump which is fair to blame the media for. But I don't think lack of scrutiny is what propelled his popularity though. I agree he is a strong communicator. In this case I think there was a thirst by the public to get clear non politicized communication about the virus. I don't think Trump was providing it from the white house and I think Cuomo filled that void. Its why the public and the media gravitated towards him.

Now it appears that some of that communication was not completely clear or honest which is now surfacing as an issue for him. Rightfully so. Perhaps the media should have scrutinized him more. Those are all fair points. But what I was trying to gauge through this thread was if the Right wing could recognize the void in trust and communication that was coming from the White House and how it contributed to Cuomo's popularity as his style and presentation filled that void.

A big part of it is that he simply showed SOME type of leadership. Other governors and mayors of both parties sat on their thumbs and did jack shit in terms of public leadership, while scientists were warning about the threat to our healthcare infrastructure and other infrastructures. People were crying out for leadership from their executives. Cuomo, for all the good and bad, demonstrated leadership.

Here in my city, our mayor and governor said fuck all for months. While scientists were going on our local news warning of our hospitals filling up and our essential services being handicapped, they did and said jack shit about any of it for months. Disgraceful.

And regarding the nursing home debacle. NY hospitals were overwhelmed with dying covid patients. Initially patients who had covid and were out of danger but still positive were sent back to nursing homes. They were SUPPOSED to only be re-admitted to nursing homes if those NHs had adequate isolation and treatment facilities.

The fact that NHs were reticent to receive these covid positive patients should have been a red flag. That situation was actually resolved within a couple weeks but the damage was done.

Of note is the fact that this occurred in virtually every state that was hard hit early on and in fact covid found it's way into NHs across the nation.

Unfortunately we are now hearing that numbers may have been fudged. That doesn't change outcomes one bit but it is ammunition to attack Cuomo

I just noticed that when you asked why the public gravitated in a positive way toward Cuomo, you phrased it in a way that suggests that everybody gravitated toward him in a positive way. From what I have seen, it appears that society perceived him along partisan lines, pretty much like most other political agenda. Have you seen something that suggests otherwise?

I saw several other governors doing daily videos about the pandemic none came close to gaining the response and popularity as Cuomo. He got an international Emmy. So I'd say that was a pretty positive and popular response.
