There are that that have told their story online. I personally met many people that have been locked up for long periods of time. They are held until the mental hospital no longer deems themselves a threat to themselves.

Attempted suicide is not a crime. The only laws are that the state is allowed to hold people indefinitely when they are diagnosed with mental illnesses, and deemed by a hospital to present a threat to themselves or others.
