As Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law, Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, pleaded not guilty to conspiring to kill Americans in New York Federal Court today, Republicans in Congress were criticizing the Obama administration for prosecuting a suspected al Qaeda terrorist in a civilian court just about a mile from the 9/11 memorial built over Ground Zero.
“Abu Ghaith has sworn to kill Americans and he likely possesses information that could prevent harm to America and its allies,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., wrote in a statement. “He is an enemy combatant and should be held in military custody.”

Are Americans becoming less susceptible to GOP terrorism? The ability of the GOP to scare Americans? I think this case might give us a clue.

Imagine trying suspected terrorists....

What a concept

Imagine that he is getting all the rights given to American citizens to include the right to remain silent.

His ass should have gone straight to Gitmo where he could have been interrogated without a lawyer standing there telling him, "You don't have to answer that.".

This is BS plain and simple.

I don't understand why this isn't being screamed by every headline and news person, We went through this once already when Obossman wanted to bring them all up here and set them free on our streets....

Which is what will happen if they actually tried them in our sissy assed liberal courts.

Why don't we kill him with a drone? Oh, that's right, he's not an American, he gets a fair trial.

There are already 355 terrorists in American prisons. - Slate Magazine

Maybe these people don't understand what life is like in these "supermax" prisons. Take ADX Florence, the supermax in Colorado—"the Alcatraz of the Rockies"—that serves as the home to Omar Abdel-Rahman, the "blind sheikh" who organized the 1993 World Trade Center bombing; Zacarias Moussaoui, one of the Sept. 11 plotters; Richard Reid, the shoe-bomber; Theodore Kaczynski, the "Unabomber"; and Terry Nichols, who helped plan the Oklahoma City bombing, to name a few.
These are all truly dangerous people, but it's not as if they run into one another in the lunch line or the yard. There is no lunch line; there is no yard. Most of the prisoners are kept in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day. For one hour, they're taken to another concrete room, indoors, to exercise, by themselves. Their only windows face the sky, so they have no way of knowing even where they are within the prison. Phone calls to the outside world are banned. Finally, the prison is crammed with cameras and motion detectors. Compartments are separated by 1,400 remote-controlled steel doors; the place is surrounded by 12-foot-high razor-wire fences; the area between the wire and the walls is further secured by laser beams and attack dogs.

Took me all of 20 seconds to find that out. Took even less time to feel pity for you.

The children of some of the wealthiest people in the world will likely get a wrist pat.

The subsequent SEC investigation ended in 1992 with a memo stating "it appears that Bush did not engage in illegal insider trading," but noted that the memo "must in no way be construed as indicating that the party has been exonerated or that no action may ultimately result".[5] Critics allege that this decision was strongly influenced by the makeup of the SEC at the time, which heavily favored Bush. The chairman at the time was Richard Breeden, a good friend of the Bush family's who had been nominated to the SEC by President George H. W. Bush and who had been a lawyer in James Baker's firm, Baker Botts. The SEC's general counsel at the time was James Doty, who had represented George W. Bush when he sought to buy into the Texas Rangers (although Doty recused himself from the investigation.) Bush's own lawyer was Robert Jordan, who had been "partners with both Doty and Breeden at Baker Botts and who later became George W. Bush's ambassador to Saudi Arabia".

Professional life of George W. Bush

And remember Romney. He was running companies years after he said he wasn't. Destroyed all Olympics documents. The government had to "cover" company debts again and again.

So it's true, the "rich" do get a "bye".

Imagine the millions we'll spend prosecuting this guy after giving him Constitutional rights...We could open up the White House for tours again with all that money you think?...That guy should be tried in a military court....Obama's an idiot

“Abu Ghaith has sworn to kill Americans and he likely possesses information that could prevent harm to America and its allies,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., wrote in a statement. “He is an enemy combatant and should be held in military custody.”

Absent due process, obviously.

Conservatives are in no position to criticize Obama on the issue.

New York Republican Rep. Pete King, R-N.Y., said he preferred that Abu Ghaith face trial in a military tribunal rather than civilian court, and he questioned what type of standard today’s hearing could set.

“While a federal court trial of Abu Ghaith in lower Manhattan would not present the same security issues as a trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, I strongly believe as a matter of policy that military tribunals are the proper venue for enemy combatants,” said King, a member of the House committees on Intelligence and Homeland Security. “If the Abu Ghaith trial does go forward in federal court, it must not be used as a precedent for future enemy combatants who should be tried at Guantanamo.”
Nonsense.

Federal courts have a much better track record than military tribunals with regard to convictions and severity of sentence.

And the Right has the gall to call others "Low-Information Voters."

He has been interrogated and has given 22 pages of information already!!!

How Sulaiman Abu Ghaith was caught - CBS News

While in Turkish custody, he was interrogated by a U.S. multi-agency group known as the High-Value Interrogation Group, or the HIG. Made up of experienced interrogators, polygraph experts from the CIA, FBI and Department of Defense, the HIG also brings in the agents and analysts who know the most about the person being questioned.

They gathered hours of intelligence from Abu Ghaith which was eventually summarized in a 22-page document. It included details about the mechanics of how Abu Ghaith and his fellow al Qaeda members operated while under house arrest in Iran.

If this guy actually did what they claim he should not be tried where it puts civilians at risk. If, on the other hand, they are just trying to score political points against someone who ie, essentially, innocent, they are doing exactly what they should, putting him up for a show trial in a city where it is impossible to obtain a fair verdict.

Yep he gave a 22 page statement. that would make about 2 pages per year that we have been looking for his ass. But now that he's been told he has the right to remain silent do you think he'll be forthcoming with anything else he knows?

And then Rdeano thinks this is the same as Americans arrested on American soil.

Get a clue people. this clown should be facing military justice which by the way after KSM confessed and pleaded guilty, the trials were stopped by our not so illustrious administration.... Should have been all over for these guys years ago.....
