We build monuments to people to commemorate their great achievements, not to acknowledge their place in history. We don't build moments to Adolph Hitler, Benedict Arnold, or John Wilkes Booth although they certainly occupy a prominent place in our history. To have monuments commemorating the great achievements of men that championed slavery and lead a bloody rebellion against the United States that nearly destroyed the nation is just plain nuts.

You would expect a president when faced with an epidemic in the US would follow the recommendation of the scientists he has chosen as advisors. The fact is Trump now sees the recommendations by the scientists are at odds with his re-election campaign so he is doing all he can to subvert those recommendations even thou he knows it will bring sickness and death to many people. This illustrates why Donald Trump will never be considered a great president and most probably a one term president. Real presidential courage is doing what you know is best for nation regardless of the personal consequences. This could have been Trump's moment courage.

Your reference to the civil war is superficial at best. Virginia, the most important southern state, had voted to stay in the Union until Lincoln ordered the invasion of the seceding states. His unconstitutional action amounted to a declaration of war against the concept of State Sovereinty which Virginia felt forced to oppose, ironically placing it in a position of defending the Constitution by joining the secession.

By 1864, the bloody War to Preserve the Union had become so unpopular that Lincoln had to recast it as holy war to end slavery, even though he had promised to preserve it as a Presidential candidate. For most Southerners, the War Between the States was not about slavery, but about defending themselves against an attack by an oppressive government. In that sense, Robert E. Lee was as much of a patriot as George Washington.
