I think the best thing that can happen for the Ukrainians is that Russia keeps some territory in the east with a Russian speaking population and the war ends with a peace agreement. If the Ukrainians are worn down and the Russians break through to Kiev, then the Ukrainians lose everything.

What about security guarantees for Ukraine? Putin cannot be trusted; he really wants ALL of Ukraine. He thinks Ukraine should not exist and all Ukrainians should be Russians, even though Ukraine has been independent since 1991 & has not threatened Russia in any violent way.

Ukraine, like all countries, wants to improve its standards of living, and wants to join the EU with NATO security, but THAT is what gets Putin upset, and JEALOUS! Putin does not want Ukraine's economy & lifestyles (toward the West) to make Russia look bad in comparison, or HE will look bad & overthrown.

Ukraine wants its FREEDOM like other Western countries, and USA/Trump should value that! Eventually, Ukraine will benefit EU & USA, and if not for ethical reasons, Trump can help achieve a win-win situation for Western values at the expense of Putin's murderous authoritarianism.

IS PEACE not what Trump wants? Well, Putin does not want a peaceful Ukraine, so Russia will NOT agree to a cease fire unless it gets its way by NOT allowing the West to give Ukraine security guarantees.

If Putin does not agree to peace with Ukraine, then other former USSR countries could be next with a weak, fractured Western alliance. Therefore, if a cease fire is not acceptable to Putin on reasonable (to Ukraine) conditions, THEN Ukraine should be accepted into NATO. Putin will not like that, but he's smart enough not to test NATO with his nuclear options.
