If Putin does not agree to peace with Ukraine, then other former USSR countries could be next with a weak, fractured Western alliance. Therefore, if a cease fire is not acceptable to Putin on reasonable (to Ukraine) conditions, THEN Ukraine should be accepted into NATO. Putin will not like that, but he's smart enough not to test NATO with his nuclear options.
You said security guarantees. What do you mean? Do you mean we go to war with Russia, if Russia breaks the peace?
Do you want WWIII to protect Ukraine?
Isn't the matter of Serbia seen as a bad reason to have started WWI? WWII is seen by many as a continuation of WWI.
Was Serbia worth WWI and WWII? No bloody way.
