Renewables are fine, but they're basically just adding more overall energy to the grid. Countries like China and the EU nations are investing heavily in renewables but that's probably just as much due to the fact that they are fossil fuel-poor as it is a desire to be eco-friendly.

In terms of environmental impact, renewables require fossil fuels for mining and extraction, and then there's the issue of habitat destruction/disruption as well.
