Their economy is so screwed up, they can't even pay people to use their own oil, to keep the power on. Everyone is leaving, or working in the black market.

Lincoln wanted to protect slavery int he South with a constitutional amendment to guarantee slavery in perpetuity in order to avoid a long and bloody civil war. He had no intention of eradicating slavery by force and thought it would have died off by itself, and I think he was probably right. Machines are far cheaper to operate and maintain than slaves were.

The South did not, as a whole, fight for the cause of slavery.
